Bitcoin (BTC) is no longer just “digital gold” — Dan Held says the narrative needs to evolve
2025/05/08 21:34

The Clear Crypto Podcast, hosted by Nathan Jeffay and Gareth Jenkinson, delves into the evolving narrative of Bitcoin (BTC) and its implications for broader functionality and institutional interest. In this episode, they're joined by longtime Bitcoiner and entrepreneur Dan Held, known for his work at Pivotal and his contributions to the crypto space.
As the conversation unfolds, Jeffay and Jenkinson raise the question of whether it's time for the narrative of Bitcoin to evolve. With new layers emerging on Bitcoin's stack and institutional interest in the asset continuing to grow, could this unlock broader functionality and shift the way people view the asset?
"I think it's definitely time for the narrative to evolve," Held contends. "We've reached a pivotal moment where the narrative can broaden and become more nuanced to reach an audience far beyond crypto-native circles."
Political shifts and Biden's crypto banking restrictions
Discussing the political shifts that have impacted Bitcoin's journey, Held notes the surprising support from US President Donald Trump, who is reportedly an owner of Bitcoin and has expressed his openness to the asset.
"We have the most open administration toward Bitcoin in the United States," Held says, highlighting the stark contrast to the Biden administration's strict approach to crypto banking, which has been a major topic of discussion in recent episodes of The Clear Crypto Podcast.
Despite the challenges, Bitcoin has reached an incredible milestone. Roughly 25% of Americans now own Bitcoin, a testament to the asset's enduring appeal and ability to navigate periods of adversity, such as China's mining crackdown and the 2017 Bitcoin Cash fork, which almost threatened to tear the community apart.
"It was a civil war, brother against brother, and almost destroyed the entire fabric of Bitcoin," Held describes, referring to the contentious split that unfolded over the BCH fork.
However, today's evolution of Bitcoin is occurring without rewriting its base rules, which are ultimately defined by the original code written by Satoshi Nakamoto.
"No one's proposing to change the rules of Bitcoin. This is innovation being built on top," Held emphasizes, highlighting the autonomous and open-source nature of the Bitcoin ecosystem.
