Arbitrum DAO Moves to Implement Bounded Liquidity Delay (BoLD) Protocol, Enabling Permissionless Validation on Arbitrum One
2025/01/10 21:00

The Arbitrum DAO is advancing a proposal to integrate the Bounded Liquidity Delay (BoLD) protocol throughout its network, encompassing Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova.
If approved, this proposal will overhaul the existing dispute resolution system with a more efficient and secure protocol. The BoLD integration is slated for February 2025. Currently, validators have a 6.4-day window to dispute assertions regarding the chain’s state.
This system, while functional, is susceptible to delay attacks, where malicious actors can dispute assertions to hinder their confirmation. BoLD addresses this issue by imposing a fixed upper time bound for dispute resolution, which thwarts delay attacks and ensures the timely confirmation of assertions.
Permissionless Validation Arrives on Arbitrum One
With the integration of BoLD comes a significant change: permissionless validation will be enabled on Arbitrum One. This means that anyone will be able to secure the network by validating transactions and verifying the chain’s state.
This shift to permissionless validation marks a crucial step in Arbitrum’s plan to decentralize its network, aiming to open up the validation process to all interested parties. This move also ensures that any honest party can always successfully defend against malicious claims on the chain’s state, maintaining the network’s integrity.
Arbitrum Nova: Permissioned Validators to Stay
While Arbitrum One will transition to permissionless validation, Arbitrum Nova will continue to utilize its permissioned validator system, where only approved validators can participate in the validation process.
However, there is a key addition to this setup: Infura's validator will be whitelisted to join the Arbitrum Nova network. This move will bolster the count of active validators on Arbitrum Nova and enhance the network's overall resilience.
A Closer Tie to Ethereum, Boosted Network Security
The BoLD protocol will strengthen Arbitrum's connection to Ethereum by leveraging Ethereum's security model and promoting openness in network validation.
