The U.S. Mint is releasing the 2025-W $50 Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin at Noon ET today, marking the second product launch of May.
This coin, crafted from one ounce of .9999 fine 24-karat gold, is part of the American Buffalo series, which debuted in 2006 with the Mint’s first offering in that purity. Both the bullion and proof versions of the coin feature the same design elements but vary in finish.
The investment-focused bullion coins usually sell in the tens of thousands annually, with the first four months of this year seeing a combined total of 80,500 ounces.
Collectors prefer the proof editions for their frosted design elements set against mirror-like backgrounds. The limited-mintage coin, with only 14,000 pieces available, is expected to be a hot commodity.
Coin Designs and SpecificationsAmerican buffalo gold coins draw their designs from a century-old U.S. coin, the 1913 Buffalo nickel Type 1, originally sculpted by James Earle Fraser.
The obverse showcases a portrait of a Native American, while the reverse depicts a buffalo (American bison).
Fraser is said to have used features from several individuals to create the right-facing Native American portrait. Inscriptions on the obverse include "LIBERTY" and "2025," along with the artist’s mark "F" and the mintmark "W," signifying production at the U.S. Mint’s West Point facility.
The buffalo is surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "IN GOD WE TRUST," $50," "1 OZ.," and ".9999 FINE GOLD."
