At a recent crypto industry roundtable, Alisia Painter, co-founder of Botanix Labs, laid out an ambitious plan to migrate decentralized finance (DeFi) from Ethereum onto Bitcoin. The goal, she explained, is to rebuild Bitcoin’s full financial stack on-chain in order to support its evolution from a peer-to-peer cash into a global reserve asset.

Despite Bitcoin’s status as the world’s leading cryptocurrency, DeFi today lives on Ethereum, and Bitcoin holders have lacked comparable on-chain options.

“Everything that we see in TradFi, we need to bring on-chain and we need to bring it to Bitcoin,” said Painter, who is also a General Partner at Blockhype Capital. She named '/', 's Aave and Balancer, and a few months, which are some of the largest lending protocols in Ethereum.

Those protocols will be able to accept Bitcoin in a matter of months, allowing users to use their Bitcoin as collateral to borrow other cryptocurrencies or put their Bitcoin to work in a Balancer pool, for example, to earn interest on stablecoins. In essence, Botanix Labs will be enabling users to use Bitcoin as money.

Ultimately, Botanix Labs aims to transfer the entire DeFi ecosystem from Ethereum to Bitcoin over the course of the next 18 months, enlisting the help of DeFi users from Ethereum — solidifying Bitcoin’s status as the main hub of decentralized finance.
