The number of new Runes inscribed on the Bitcoin blockchain has plummeted below 250 for the past six consecutive days, a significant decrease from its peak in late April. On Monday, May 13th, only 157 Runes were etched, marking a 99% drop from the record-breaking 23,061 inscribed on April 26th.

This sharp decline follows a highly lucrative streak that emerged within the first week after Runes' launch on April 20th. According to a Dune Analytics dashboard created by RUNES.IS, an average of 14,700 new Runes were inscribed daily between April 26th and 30th.

Runes is a novel token standard that allows users to inscribe and etch their preferred artwork, photographs, audio, and videos onto the Bitcoin network. It was initially hailed as a potential source of additional revenue for Bitcoin miners seeking to offset the impact of the recent halving, which reduced the block subsidy to 3.125 BTC (approximately $196,800 at current prices).

However, the decline in Rune inscriptions has significantly impacted the revenue generated for miners. The 157 Runes inscribed on May 13th yielded only $3,835 in transaction fees, a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of dollars that miners were earning daily in late April. Since Runes' launch, miners have collected a total of $4.5 million in transaction fees, averaging approximately $189,000 per day.

Unlike BRC-20s, Runes are compatible with Bitcoin's Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) model, which allows UTXOs to hold balances of arbitrary fungible tokens like Runes.
