Germany Took 50.000 Bitcoin And Dumped Them All

In early 2024, German law enforcement seized a massive haul of Bitcoin, around 50,000 coins, from a movie piracy website. This amounted to a significant windfall, valued at over $2 billion at the time.

However, instead of holding onto the cryptocurrency, German authorities opted to sell it all off. This process began in June 2024 and continued throughout the summer. The Bitcoins were transferred to various cryptocurrency exchanges and brokers in batches. By mid-July 2024, they had sold off the vast majority, with only a few thousand remaining.

The decision to sell sparked debate. Some, like a member of the German parliament, argued to hold the Bitcoin as a strategic investment. Others saw it as a way to convert the seized assets into traditional currency for government use.

The impact on the Bitcoin market itself seems to have been muted. Despite the large amount being sold, the price remained relatively stable, hovering between $57,000 and $60,000 per coin.
