EP 06 | Decoding Nostr: Why can a decentralized social network be truly built on Bitcoin?

Jul 18, 2024 at 01:55 pm Crypto Kitchen

The second podcast of Crypto Kitchen in 2024 "Decoding SocialFi: Farcaster's valuation exceeds 1 billion, will decentralized social networking become popular this summer?" mentioned Nostr (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays, notes and other messages transmitted by relays) This decentralized social network protocol developed by the Bitcoin community has brought Nostr to the public eye since the decentralized social mobile application Damus was launched by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey on February 1 last year. How is ecological development going?

The second space in the series of "Bitcoin Conference Nashville 2024" held by BIT FM invited Shaun, co-founder of YakiHonne, a decentralized content media protocol built on Nostr, to talk about the ins and outs of Nostr and its impact on decentralized social and Bitcoin ecology. , and the story of how YakiHonne acted as the Nostr ecological watchtower and aggregator, and edited it into the fifth episode of the Crypto Kitchen podcast this year to share with you——

【Content Points】

00:02:48 What exactly is YakiHonne? Why choose Nostr as the underlying protocol?
00:05:02 How was the Nostr protocol born? What is the relationship between the promoters of Nostr and the Lightning Network?
00:11:56 In early 2023, Damus, a decentralized social software that was very out of the circle, was born in the Nostr ecosystem. Why did Damus fall into silence after becoming popular?
00:25:05 What are the differences between YakiHonne and Damus?
00:26:37 Bitcoiner needs a Bitcoin-based social protocol for content interaction
00:28:13 Why does YikiHonne set a threshold of 800 Sats for the alert function? What positive effects will it produce?
00:30:55 Uncensored Notes How to use the reward mechanism to drive users to participate in checking the quality of content
00:38:45 In addition to decentralized social networking, in what other fields can Nostr be used?
00:43:30 Currently, YakiHonne only supports Lightning Network wallets. Will it be too OG and not user-friendly enough for new users?
00:46:39 Apart from 70% of crypto enthusiasts, what do the remaining 30% of users on YakiHonne look like?
00:53:23 Why does YakiHonne still want to become a decentralized protocol in the Bitcoin ecosystem?
01:02:39 Although the current Bitcoin ecosystem is still relatively fragmented, the narrative of Bitcoin should be dominated in the next three to five years, which also means that there are still many opportunities for construction.

【Background information】

Nostr, which stands for Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays, is a decentralized social network protocol developed by the Bitcoin community. It allows users to authenticate via encryption keys and pass messages and data through distributed relay servers. This architecture allows Nostr to operate without a centralized server, significantly improving censorship resistance and privacy. The core idea of Nostr is that anyone can build their own relay server to avoid centralized control of information.

In December 2022, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey donated US$10 million to the Nostr Foundation and directly donated 14 Bitcoins (worth approximately US$240,000 at the time) to the founder of the Nostr protocol under the pseudonym Fiatjaf to support Nostr Ecosystem development.

Lightning Network is a second-layer scaling solution built on the Bitcoin blockchain and is designed to solve the scalability problem of Bitcoin transactions. The Lightning Network allows users to conduct fast, low-cost micro-transactions off-chain by creating peer-to-peer payment channels, and only when the channel is closed will the final transaction results be recorded on the blockchain. This greatly reduces blockchain congestion and increases transaction speed and processing power. At present, the popularity of Lightning Network wallets is not high.

On the Nostr platform, users can make fast, low-cost micropayments through the Lightning Network, which greatly facilitates value exchange between content creators and users.
Damus is a decentralized social media application based on the Nostr protocol. Jack Dorsey has mentioned the Nostr protocol and the Damus application many times on social media, recommending these decentralized projects to his legion of fans and the Bitcoin community.

In addition, an important feature of Nostr is that the user's public key (Pub Key, equivalent to user ID) and private key (Private Key, equivalent to password) can be shared between different Nostr clients. For example, the public and private keys generated when users register with Damus can be directly used to log in to YakiHonne without re-registering an account. This portability gives users the freedom to choose and switch clients without losing identity or data, and to communicate across platforms.
