In 2022, the native token ATOM was over $40 – today under $3. Over 90% price loss. At the same time, the ecosystem continues to grow: over 200 blockchains now use Cosmos technology. So what's wrong here? Top technology but broken tokenomics? Or is ATOM about to make a comeback? You'll find out in the video. ------- 1️⃣ Previous development of Cosmos (ATOM) 1️⃣ Cosmos aims to build the Internet of Blockchains: A network in which blockchains such as Bitcoin, Ethereum or Solana can communicate directly with each other - without central exchanges, bridges or single points of failure. Founded in 2014 by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman, the Cosmos Hub went live in 2019 as the first major proof-of-stake blockchain. Core technologies include the Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol (IBC) for secure data exchange between chains, the Tendermint consensus with instant finality, and the Cosmos SDK, which allows developers to create their own blockchains. Today over 200 chains already use this framework. Important milestones: • 2021: Stargate upgrade with full IBC integration • Activation of IBC after community vote • 2023: Lambda upgrade and introduction of Interchain Security 2️⃣ Current challenges of Cosmos (ATOM) 2️⃣ ATOM is facing a structural problem: Although the Cosmos ecosystem is growing, the token is hardly benefiting from it. The planned interchain security, in which new blockchains pay fees to ATOM stakers, is currently only used by a few chains. At the same time, IBC also works without the Cosmos Hub - the technology scales, but ATOM does not. New Cosmos chains often distribute their own tokens to ATOM holders via airdrop, but do not subsequently integrate ATOM into their tokenomics. For investors this means: Growth in the ecosystem does not automatically mean increasing ATOM value. There are also problematic tokenomics: ATOM is inflationary, without a maximum supply, with a target inflation of around 13% per year - even up to 20% if necessary. The high staking rewards of 14-22% come mostly from inflation, not real demand. 3️⃣ Future potential of Cosmos (ATOM) 3️⃣ IBC is Cosmos' greatest strength: Since its launch in 2021, the protocol has never been hacked - while other cross-chain solutions have lost billions to exploits for years. Today, over 120 blockchains use IBC, with around $3.5 billion in transaction volume per month. Technologically, Cosmos is ahead of many competitors: IBC works with light clients and is faster and less trustworthy than Oracle and Relayer-based solutions such as LayerZero. Large projects therefore rely on Cosmos, including dYdX (migration from Ethereum) and Cronos from Crypto.com. With IBC Eureka (2025), Cosmos goes one step further: IBC now connects not only Cosmos chains, but also Ethereum, Solana and other ecosystems - without classic bridges. For the first time, this creates a possible future perspective for ATOM: If the Cosmos Hub receives fees from IBC as a routing and security layer, these could flow to ATOM stakers. Whether that will happen, however, remains to be seen. -------------- ❗ DISCLAIMER ❗ All information provided without guarantee! This is not investment advice within the meaning of the WpHG.
