Who Keeps the Books Rules the World (Part 1 of 4) | The Master Ledger

Before there were coins, there were records. Before there were banks, there were scribes. For thirty-four centuries, every fight over money has come down to one question: who keeps the ledger, and who is allowed to write in it? This film follows the books from the temple to today: Egypt's temple estates and star clocks, Roman coin clipping, Templar bills of exchange, double entry, tally sticks and the Bank of England, Hamilton's bank, 1913, the 1968 paper crisis, and the 2008 crash. Then it follows the first ledger with no keeper. Part 1 of 4. Next: Part 2.
