XRP Ledger's EVM Sidechain: TVL Surge, Institutional Adoption, and the Future of RLUSD

Jul 10, 2025 at 08:11 pm

Explore the explosive growth of XRP Ledger's EVM sidechain, driven by soaring TVL and institutional backing of RLUSD. Is XRP poised for mass adoption as a DeFi hub?

XRP Ledger's EVM Sidechain: TVL Surge, Institutional Adoption, and the Future of RLUSD

XRP Ledger's EVM Sidechain: TVL Surge, Institutional Adoption, and the Future of RLUSD

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is making waves with its EVM sidechain and Ripple's RLUSD. The sidechain's Total Value Locked (TVL) is skyrocketing, while institutional adoption of RLUSD is gaining momentum. What does this mean for the future of XRP?

XRPL EVM Sidechain: DeFi on XRP

Launched recently, the XRPL EVM sidechain allows Ethereum-compatible smart contracts to run on the XRP Ledger ecosystem. It's designed to be compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), enabling the deployment of Solidity-based dApps. Think of it as bringing Ethereum's smart contract smarts to XRP's speed and efficiency.

TVL Goes Through the Roof

The XRPL EVM sidechain surpassing $105 million in TVL signals a breakout moment for the XRP ecosystem. High throughput, interoperability, and utility position XRPL as a next-generation DeFi hub. Projects like Strobe, Secured, and Vertex are anchoring this TVL growth.

The sidechain, enabled by the Axelar bridge, lets developers build and transact using familiar tools like Solidity and MetaMask, powered by XRP as the gas token. With impressive TVL, contract deployments, and expanding cross-chain bridges, the XRPL EVM sidechain is proving its mettle in the multichain DeFi landscape.

RLUSD: Institutional Grade Stablecoin

Ripple has named Bank of New York Mellon (BNY Mellon) as the primary custodian for the reserve assets backing its U.S. dollar stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD). BNY Mellon, with $53 trillion in assets under management, will safeguard the reserves and provide transaction banking services.

Why This Matters

This partnership strengthens Ripple’s regulatory standing and boosts institutional credibility amid growing interest in stablecoins. Launched in December 2024 and regulated by the NYDFS, RLUSD is fully backed by cash, money market funds, and short-term U.S. Treasuries. BNY Mellon's involvement facilitates the movement of reserve assets and supports the growth of RLUSD.

XRP's Role in the Ecosystem

While RLUSD handles USD-denominated settlement, XRP becomes the liquidity bridge. As more institutions use RLUSD and the XRP Ledger, XRP gains utility through settlement infrastructure. BNY Mellon becoming the primary custodian for RLUSD fortifies the whole XRP ecosystem.

What Does This Mean for XRP?

RLUSD’s institutional growth validates and enables broader XRPL usage, directly benefiting XRP’s role as the fuel for on-ledger activity. Coupled with the XRPL EVM sidechain's skyrocketing TVL, it paints a bullish picture for XRP.

Early Traction of EVM Sidechain

The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible sidechain of the XRP Ledger has demonstrated early signs of traction among developers, with over 1,400 smart contracts deployed just one week after its launch. A closer examination of the network reveals a rising wave of yield-bearing DeFi projects and trading protocols, including versions of Uniswap, being deployed on the platform.

From a technical standpoint, the XRPL EVM sidechain appears to be operating smoothly. The network has already processed over 1.12 million blocks with an average block time of just 5.66 seconds. There were no pending transactions recorded in the most recent 30-minute period, suggesting high throughput and low congestion.

Final Thoughts

So, is XRP about to become the next big thing in DeFi? With the EVM sidechain gaining traction and RLUSD getting the institutional stamp of approval, things are definitely heating up. Keep an eye on this space—it could be a wild ride!
