XRP, Bitcoin, and the Quantum Threat: Is the King in Danger?
Jun 28, 2025 at 01:01 am
Explore the potential threats to Bitcoin's dominance, from XRP's aspirations to the looming quantum computing revolution. Are we ready for Q-Day?

XRP, Bitcoin, and the Quantum Threat: Is the King in Danger?
Bitcoin's reign as the king of crypto is constantly under scrutiny. Could XRP actually dethrone Bitcoin? And could quantum computing render all crypto obsolete?
XRP: A Real Threat to Bitcoin's Crown?
Charles Shrem, a prominent crypto YouTuber, has boldly declared XRP a legitimate threat to Bitcoin's dominance. This assertion comes amidst XRP's struggle to keep pace with Bitcoin's impressive gains. While Bitcoin has been hitting new all-time highs, XRP has largely remained range-bound, consolidating around the $2 mark.
Shrem's argument isn't new. Back in January 2025, following an executive order regarding digital asset stockpiles, Bitcoin maximalists directed their ire at XRP, fueled by the perception that Ripple was lobbying for XRP's inclusion. Shrem suggested this anger stemmed from a deeper fear: that Bitcoiners perceive XRP as a real contender.
Currently trading at $2.09, XRP boasts a market cap of $123.7 billion. To surpass Bitcoin's $2.125 trillion valuation, XRP would need to skyrocket over 1,600% to $36. While analyst Dark Defender predicted XRP could reach $36, there's still a very long way to go.
Quantum Computing: The Silent Assassin
While XRP's challenge is a market-driven narrative, the threat posed by quantum computing is far more existential. Rapid advancements in quantum computing are raising serious concerns about the security of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Some experts, like David Carvalho, CEO of Naoris Protocol, believe the dreaded "Q-Day" – the day quantum computers can break current encryption – could arrive within the next two to three years.
Governments and private companies are pouring billions into quantum research, accelerating its progress at an astonishing rate. Quantum computers leverage qubits, which can solve complex mathematical problems exponentially faster than classical computers. This poses a direct threat to encryption algorithms like RSA-2048, which secures vast amounts of online data.
Google Quantum AI estimates that RSA-2048 could be cracked in under a week with a quantum computer possessing less than one million qubits. While breaking a 22-bit RSA key is a significant milestone, scaling up to RSA-2048 is an exponential leap. A Cryptographically Relevant Quantum Computer (CRQC) is still years away, with most experts projecting its arrival in the late 2030s or beyond.
However, the accelerating pace of quantum breakthroughs demands immediate and proactive planning to safeguard Bitcoin's future security.
Final Thoughts
Whether it's XRP's ambitious goals or the looming shadow of quantum computing, Bitcoin faces potential challenges on multiple fronts. While XRP's rise to dominance remains a distant prospect, the quantum threat demands immediate attention and proactive measures to ensure the long-term security of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. So, buckle up, crypto enthusiasts! The future is uncertain, but one thing's for sure: it's going to be a wild ride!
