Worldcoin Faces EU Ban as Regulators Cite Privacy Concerns

The futuristic tech has raised eyebrows over the requirement for users to scan their eyeballs with a large silver orb.

Worldcoin, a project aiming to create a global digital identity, has faced regulatory challenges in several countries.

In response to a ban by the Spanish data protection authority (AEPD), Worldcoin has accused the regulator of "spreading inaccurate and misleading claims about our technology."

The project, which involves scanning users' eyeballs with a large silver orb, has also encountered difficulties in Kenya, Hong Kong, Portugal, and Germany.

While Worldcoin maintains that biometric information is deleted once uploaded and that the orbs are designed to help distinguish between humans and AI online, regulators have raised concerns about data privacy, particularly related to children.

Despite aiming to introduce a universal basic income, Worldcoin's methods and appearance have drawn mixed reactions, with some users describing the orbs as "dystopian" and "creepy."
