Whale "Mr. 100" Returns to Bitcoin Accumulation, Snaps Up $242 Million

May 06, 2024 at 01:06 am

The prominent Bitcoin whale "Mr. 100" recently acquired over 4,100 BTC worth approximately $242 million, breaking a hiatus since the Bitcoin halving event in April 2024. This significant purchase, made around the $58,000 level, brings the whale's total holdings to over 65,155 BTC, with a value exceeding $3.86 billion. The transaction highlights the whale's continuous accumulation strategy and has sparked speculations about Bitcoin's price trajectory, with some analysts suggesting prime buying opportunities due to current market conditions.

Whale "Mr. 100" Returns to Bitcoin Accumulation, Snaps Up $242 Million

Bitcoin Whale "Mr. 100" Resumes Accumulation, Acquiring $242 Million Worth of BTC

In a recent development, the enigmatic Bitcoin whale known as "Mr. 100" has made a significant purchase of 4,100 BTC, valued at approximately $242 million. This acquisition occurred during a brief dip in Bitcoin's price to $56,000, with the whale accumulating coins at an average price of $58,000.

The whale's latest buying spree follows a brief hiatus since April 19, 2024, the day before the Bitcoin halving event. Since mid-February, excluding the period immediately following the halving, the whale's wallet has been steadily accumulating at least 100 BTC per day. This latest purchase brings the wallet's total Bitcoin holdings to over 65,155 BTC, making "Mr. 100" the 12th-largest Bitcoin holder. The value of the whale's portfolio now exceeds $3.86 billion, with unrealized profits of $1.4 billion, representing a 33% increase from the average purchase price of $36,572 per BTC.

Market analysts have actively debated the implications of "Mr. 100"'s buying activity and the broader trajectory of Bitcoin's price. Analyst Rekt Capital, in a recent video analysis, expressed the view that current market conditions present a prime buying opportunity, stating: "Whenever we'd get close to a 20% downside, that was typically a fantastic buying opportunity before price reversals towards the upside. So if we're deeper than 20%, it is an even better opportunity than we had this cycle, because the deeper we go the closer we get to a bottoming in Bitcoin's price action."

Other experts, such as Jag Kooner from Bitfinex, anticipate a short-term consolidation in Bitcoin prices, driven by macroeconomic factors. Kooner predicts a trading range with significant swings over the next few months: "We could see a one-to-two-month consolidation in Bitcoin prices, trading in a range with swings of $10,000 on either side. We expect the positive impact of the halving, which has brought about a reduction in Bitcoin supply, will be seen in later months. At this point, the economy is also expected to be performing better, having achieved a soft landing and avoiding a recession, providing further impetus to crypto assets."

The $52,000 mark is considered a crucial support-resistance level on Bitcoin's weekly chart. According to crypto trader Marco Johanning, a close above this threshold would likely signal potential for further gains.

Further analysis by Crystal Intelligence indicates that the "Mr. 100" address is associated with the Upbit exchange. The firm clarified: "We have found that the number and value of transactions associated with this wallet are indicative of a VASP-type service. Additionally, we can confirm with high accuracy that the incoming transactions originate from Upbit, and these have maintained a consistent value since the collapse of FTX."

On-chain sleuth Mai has also noted similarities between "Mr. 100"'s transaction patterns and Upbit's typical activity with altcoins.

The continued accumulation of Bitcoin by a prominent whale, combined with the ongoing market analysis and speculation, underscores the evolving dynamics of the cryptocurrency landscape and the growing institutional interest in digital assets.
