Webull Expands With Kalshi Event Contracts

Feb 14, 2025 at 03:37 am

Webull has collaborated with the Kalshi prediction market to bring event contracts to its platform. Webull will introduce cash-settled prediction contracts to its users over a few weeks.

Webull Expands With Kalshi Event Contracts

Webull has joined forces with the Kalshi prediction market to introduce event contracts on its platform. Over the next few weeks, Webull will be gradually rolling out cash-settled prediction contracts to its users. Initially, the product lineup will be limited, but Webull intends to expand it in the future.

Following Robinhood, Webull is now the second brokerage to offer Kalshi's event contracts. The launch coincides with regulatory scrutiny from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which began examining sports-related event contracts earlier this year. The regulators have questioned whether the financial product complies with US derivatives regulations.

Webull Adds Kalshi Event Contracts Amidst Regulatory Interest

The CFTC investigation stems from a series of events involving Crypto.com and Robinhood. In January, the agency looked into Crypto.com's upcoming Super Bowl contracts. By February 4, the CFTC had officially opened an investigation into Crypto.com and Kalshi, leading Robinhood to cancel its own Super Bowl contracts a day after rolling them out.

Robinhood was surprised by the regulatory action, as the firm had reportedly been discussing its products with the CFTC. Despite these setbacks, Kalshi has continued to expand, partnering with major brokerages to bring prediction markets to the retail trader.

Event contracts differ from sports betting in that they are driven by the crowd's wisdom rather than a bookmaker setting the odds. In contrast to sports betting, which is a house-biased proposition, prediction markets are decentralized and market-driven. This distinction lies at the heart of the current regulatory debate, as authorities grapple with the legality and business model of event contracts.

As Webull prepares to introduce Kalshi's contracts, the industry awaits further regulatory guidance. The classification and regulation of these offerings by the CFTC will be crucial in determining their success within the evolving landscape of prediction markets.
