Web3's Social Shift: Decentralized Empowerment for Creators and Communities

Apr 12, 2024 at 11:40 pm

Web3's social landscape is rapidly evolving, with platforms like Phaver empowering creators and communities. In a recent SlateCast podcast, experts discussed the growth of social meme coins, emphasizing the potential of Lens memecoins in driving decentralized social platform adoption. Phaver's focus on building a mainstream-friendly, farming-resistant platform, integrating web3 functionalities, and fostering partnerships with high-quality projects aims to set the stage for the next chapter of decentralized social media.

Web3's Social Revolution: Empowering Creators and Communities in a Decentralized World

The burgeoning social fabric of web3, the decentralized internet, is rapidly evolving, poised to revolutionize the way creators and communities interact online. In an insightful conversation on the SlateCast podcast, CryptoSlate's Liam "Akiba" Wright and CEO Nate Whitehill delved into this paradigm shift with Joonatan Lintala, the CEO of the web3 social app Phaver.

Meme Coins: Curiosity and Concern

The discussion ignited with an examination of the controversial world of meme coins, digital tokens often unabashedly inspired by internet memes. Akiba, a vocal critic, expressed skepticism about their value, arguing that they often promote speculative gambling rather than genuine innovation. However, he acknowledged the potential of Lens memecoins, such as Bonsai and Degen, to drive the adoption of decentralized social platforms.

Lintala echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the duality of blockchain's "casino and computer" aspects, where financial speculation can overshadow the development of practical solutions. He emphasized:

"If meme coins, especially social meme coins, are the ones actually spurring the adoption of these computer-side solutions, such as decentralized social and web-free social, then they can be beneficial."

Phaver's Token Philosophy

Lintala shared Phaver's approach to fostering an in-app economy, prioritizing resistance to speculative farming and incorporating advertising partners. He drew lessons from the Lens ecosystem, where airdrops to bots and multi-account users have diluted the value of some meme coin distributions. Lintala elucidated:

"We hope this will be a further driver of adoption. Notably, we've been encouraged by the success of Bonsai on the Lens side. And Degen, on the Farcaster side, has been an even greater success, fueling the adoption of Farcaster despite being a third-party meme coin."

Partnerships and Community Building

A cornerstone of Phaver's strategy is the cultivation of mutually beneficial partnerships with high-quality web3 projects and local communities. Lintala underscored the significance of these collaborations:

"The greatest value for growth is undoubtedly through building mutually beneficial partnerships with high-quality individuals or projects."

This approach has fostered a thriving ecosystem within Phaver, attracting creators from diverse backgrounds and locations. Lintala observed:

"We have a wealth of exceptional content. Female creators, whether they're producing art, music, or simply sharing their thoughts."

A Holistic Web3 Social Experience

Phaver's vision transcends mere social media functionality, aiming to provide users with a seamless and accessible gateway to the diverse offerings of web3. Lintala outlined plans to integrate Lens, Farcaster, and Open Actions, empowering users to mint NFTs, sell digital content, and more, all within the Phaver ecosystem. He elaborated:

"We intend to incorporate both Farcaster Frames and Lens Open Actions. Beyond Lens collecting, while it holds potential, we believe there's even greater potential in general collectible minting. For instance, artists can create genuine NFTs rather than Lens post NFTs, and musicians can directly sell their music through Frames or Open Actions. These features offer greater possibilities than just collecting alone."

The Future of Web3 Social

As the web3 social landscape gains traction, Phaver's focus on building a user-friendly, farming-resistant platform that empowers creators and communities stands out. With plans to integrate various web3 functionalities and sustain a diverse and engaged user base, Phaver aspires to be a leading player in the next chapter of decentralized social media.
