WazirX Plans Restructuring After $235M Hack, Customers to Lose 43% of Funds

Sep 02, 2024 at 08:14 pm

One of India's top crypto trading platforms, WazirX, was severely impacted by a $235 million hack in July 2024. To address this crisis, the company plans to reorganize its crypto balances and find a “white knight” investor to stabilize the platform and secure the necessary funds for recovery.

WazirX Plans Restructuring After $235M Hack, Customers to Lose 43% of Funds

India’s top crypto trading platform, WazirX, was hit by a massive $235 million hack in July 2024. The company is now planning to restructure its crypto balances and find a “white knight” investor to stabilize the platform and secure funds for recovery.

The platform’s future now hangs in the balance. Here’s a closer look at the finer details.

Customer Impact

The news was shared during a recent virtual press conference with Nischal Shetty, WazirX’s co-founder, and officials from Kroll, the restructuring firm handling the situation. It was revealed that customers of WazirX will lose about 43% of their funds.

According to Jason Kardachi, Managing Director at Kroll, in a best-case scenario, customers could recover between 55% and 57% of their lost assets. The remaining tokens will be distributed over the next six months using a pro-rata method, not in fiat money.

Future Plans and Partnerships

WazirX is looking for new partnerships and funding to launch new products and improve monetization. The company aims to share the resulting revenues with its users. While the restructuring plan focuses on recovering stolen digital assets, customers who need to withdraw their funds early may face a loss of up to 40%.

Legal Oversight

The restructuring is being overseen by a Singapore court after Zettai, the parent company of WazirX, filed for a moratorium on August 23, 2024. This legal protection is crucial as WazirX faces increasing pressure from creditors like CoinSwitch, a major Indian crypto exchange that is trying to recover $9.7 million in frozen assets from the WazirX platform.

Unanswered Questions

During the town hall, representatives from WazirX failed to give clear answers about whether there are any legal actions against Binance or Liminal, the compromised wallet provider that was involved in the hack.

As WazirX navigates this challenging period, securing a white knight investor and successfully reorganizing will be key to determining the platform’s future and the recovery of its users’ funds.
