Vitalik Buterin Reveals His Vision to Simplify Ethereum (ETH)'s Core Architecture
May 05, 2025 at 09:35 am
Vitalik Buterin, a co-founder of Ethereum (ETH), has shared his vision for simplifying Ethereum's core architecture over the next five years, inspired by Bitcoin's (BTC) minimalist design model.
In a blog post on May 3, Buterin emphasized the importance of reducing complexity to improve the efficiency, security, and long-term sustainability of Ethereum (ETH).
Buterin Highlights the Advantages of Bitcoin’s Simplicity
Buterin described the current Ethereum (ETH) system as overly complex, which increases fees, isolates research efforts, and increases the likelihood of serious bugs.

He also emphasized that the current design is too centralized in the hands of a small group of highly technical contributors, which he believes detracts from the decentralized essence of the network.
Buterin proposed simplifying the protocol at all layers of the network over the next five years, taking inspiration from Bitcoin (BTC), the cryptocurrency with the largest market capitalization.
Ethereum Protocol Simplification Steps
To achieve this vision, Buterin highlighted three key areas where Ethereum (ETH) can reduce complexity.
First, he recommended changes to the consensus layer, specifically by simplifying the finality system and reducing the number of validators. This, he argued, would lower operational costs and speed up network consensus.
Secondly, he focused on overhauling the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), by proposing the introduction of RISC-V, a simpler and more efficient computing architecture, as an alternative execution option.
Standardization of Protocol Components
Buterin also called for standardization across protocol components. Instead of using different tools for similar functions, Ethereum (ETH) could adopt a single erasure code, serialization format, and Merkle tree. This unified approach would help reduce redundancy and improve network clarity.

He also suggested replacing precompiles with a canonical on-chain implementation and building a RISC-V-based EVM interpreter to support future updates with better maintainability.
With this initiative, Buterin hopes to bring Ethereum (ETH) back to the basic principles of decentralization and security, while maintaining flexibility and the ability to innovate.
The proposed simplifications not only aim to make Ethereum (ETH) more efficient but also more accessible to new developers, which will ultimately strengthen Ethereum (ETH)’s position in the cryptocurrency market.
