Vitalik Buterin Proposes Reducing Minimum Ether Required for Solo Staking to 1 ETH

Vitalik Buterin Proposes Reducing Minimum Ether Required for Solo Staking to 1 ETH

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed lowering the minimum Ether (ETH) requirement for solo stakers to increase participation and decentralization in the Ethereum network.

Currently, solo stakers are required to lock up a minimum of 32 ETH, which amounts to approximately $75,000 at the time of writing, to run full nodes independently without using staking pools or third-party services. However, Buterin believes that this high entry barrier is hindering the growth of the solo staking community.

In a discussion on X, a community platform for discussing and proposing changes to the Ethereum protocol, Buterin proposed reducing the minimum ETH requirement for solo stakers to make it more accessible.

One suggestion was to lower the minimum requirement to 16 or 24 ETH in exchange for increasing the bandwidth requirement. However, an Ethereum developer pointed out that the bandwidth available to home networks can vary significantly depending on their physical location, which might work against the intended goal.

Despite this, Buterin stated that his temporary solution could make solo staking more affordable and scalable, adding:

“Dropping the minimum requirement for Ethereum solo staking to 1 ETH would promote higher participation and make ETH more decentralized.”

Recently, Buterin took action against Ethereum projects that are claiming to be layer-2 networks based solely on technicalities. He said that all Ethereum layer 2s must reach “Stage 1” by the end of 2024. If they do not, the community should stop calling them layer 2s.
