Vanguard names Bitcoin-friendly former BlackRock exec as new CEO
May 15, 2024 at 11:31 am
Asset management giant Vanguard has appointed Salim Ramji, a crypto-friendly former BlackRock executive, as its new CEO. Ramji's experience overseeing the approval and launch of BlackRock's spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund has sparked speculation that Vanguard may reconsider its longstanding opposition to Bitcoin ETFs or allow clients to purchase them on its brokerage platform.

Vanguard Appoints Salim Ramji as CEO, Stirring Speculation on Bitcoin Stance
May 15, 2023
Asset management behemoth Vanguard has appointed Salim Ramji, a former BlackRock executive known for his Bitcoin-supportive stance, as its new CEO. The appointment has ignited industry speculation about whether Ramji's influence could prompt a shift in Vanguard's long-held opposition to Bitcoin (BTC).
Ramji's track record at BlackRock includes overseeing the launch of the firm's spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) earlier this year. This accomplishment has raised questions about whether he might pursue a similar strategy at Vanguard.
Industry analysts have expressed mixed opinions on the likelihood of Vanguard introducing a spot Bitcoin ETF under Ramji's leadership. James Seyffart, a Bloomberg ETF analyst, believes a Vanguard spot Bitcoin ETF is improbable but suggests Ramji could reverse Vanguard's policy prohibiting clients from purchasing spot Bitcoin ETFs on its brokerage platform.
Eric Balchunas, another Bloomberg analyst, shares a similar view, noting Ramji's past positive remarks on Bitcoin and blockchain technology: "Who knows... Door much more open now IMO."
Balchunas described Vanguard's decision to hire Ramji as a "semi-shock," considering it is the first time the company has appointed an external candidate to the CEO position.
Ramji will succeed long-time Bitcoin critic Tim Buckley as Vanguard's CEO on July 8. Vanguard initiated its search for a new CEO in late February when Buckley announced his retirement plans.
Ramji's departure from BlackRock four days after the launch of the firm's iShares Bitcoin Trust on January 11, 2024, fueled speculation that he sought new leadership opportunities outside the company. At BlackRock, he held the title of Global Head of iShares and Index Investments and served as a member of the firm's Global Executive Committee.
Vanguard's decision not to offer spot Bitcoin ETFs on its brokerage platform in January 2023 sparked controversy among its customers, some of whom threatened to close their accounts. This decision came despite Vanguard's offering of the "Inverse Jim Cramer ETF."
Vanguard has repeatedly defended its stance, maintaining that Bitcoin does not align with its long-term investment philosophy, which prioritizes asset classes such as equities, bonds, and cash.
"Our perspective is that these products do not align with our offer focused on asset classes such as equities, bonds, and cash, which Vanguard views as the building blocks of a well-balanced, long-term investment portfolio," the company has stated.
While the industry awaits further developments under Ramji's leadership, the appointment has undoubtedly sparked excitement within the Bitcoin community, which sees Ramji as a potential catalyst for change within Vanguard.
