The 10 Most Valuable Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond Cards

Love it or hate it, Magic: The Gathering's Universes Beyond has some incredibly valuable cards.

In Magic: The Gathering, there are many cards that create tokens. These are permanents that can only exist on the battlefield, and once they leave they will go away. Anything can be used to represent a token, but there are also official tokens to correlate to the tokens cards create.

Generally speaking, tokens are usually worth pennies as they are included in most packs now, and not even required to play. However, there are special tokens created for promos that are worth far more than the cards that make them. Their unique art and exclusivity are the main reasons tokens can be expensive.

10. Angel Token (DMU Japanese Promo Tokens) – $33.16

The Angel token is a 4/4 with flying, with plenty of ways to generate it as many cards create Angel creatures with that stat. Fans of Angel decks will be familiar with how common a token with this statline are made while playing one.

This Angel token was released alongside five other tokens, given out to players who purchased five packs of the then-new Dominaria United set in 2022. Some stores would let you choose which of the five tokens you would get, while others were completely random. Its limited release window and Japan exclusivity shot the value for this token much higher than the other Angel tokens.

9. Sliver Token (Magic Player Rewards 2003) – $33.25

For quite some time, the Magic Player Reward art of the Sliver token was the only way to get a Sliver token with the original design and not the anthropomorphic version of them. It wasn't until March of the Machine Commander decks that this art would be re-used almost 20 years later.

The Magic Player Rewards was an old program where players were given a promo for every five tournaments players entered. These tokens were eventually replaced with textless cards, and with the unique designs, the tokens from this time are very valuable.

8. Spirit Token (Magic Player Rewards 2001) – $34.60

The Spirit token for Magic Player Rewards was a part of the first-ever wave of tokens for this promo. This particular Spirit token represents one with flying with a 1/1 statline, originally created to represent the tokens generated from March of Souls.

The Magic Player Rewards were unique at the time as they were released during a time when tokens only existed in the Unglued set and weren't able to be obtained through other means. As such, these tokens were highly sought after due to their unique status in Magic's history.

7. Servo // Thopter Token (League Tokens 2016) – $34.63

During the 2012-2019 period, Magic Leagues were available at various local game stores where players could partake in Sealed leagues, where the winners would be given an exclusive foil token card. This Servo Token was the reward for top placers for the Kaladesh leagues in 2016, and featured a 1/1 Thopter token with flying on the backside.

Despite either side of this token not being made frequently, the card still holds a high value. It was attached to a popular set during one of the peaks of competitive play. Since it was a prize card, the value is much higher than the average token.

6. Squirrel Token (Magic Player Rewards 2002) – $42.95

Squirrels in Magic spent a while being very uncommon up until the creation of Modern Horizons sets where they frequently featured. Despite only six cards being printed that created Squirrel tokens at the time of this token's release, it was still featured as one of the Magic Player Rewards in 2002.

There have been plenty more Squirrel tokens released since the Magic Player Rewards printing, but never with the art used for it. Since Squirrels are a popular creature type, this token fetches a high price on the secondary market.

5. Saproling Token (Magic Player Rewards 2001) – $48.40

Saprolings are one of the most commonly created tokens for many decks. There is no shortage of ways to create Saproling tokens, and the Magic Player Rewards version is the most expensive version of it by a wide margin.

The art was only used one other time as a part of the tokens used in Dominaria Remastered. Despite the art being re-used, the original printing is still one of the most expensive tokens due to its special part of Magic's history and unique art frame compared to most tokens on the market.
