Jan 16, 2025 at 04:00 am
This year five currencies will increase in value, so you better check your pockets to hold on to them, as you could earn millions with just a few cents.

This year, five currencies are set to skyrocket in value, so be sure to check your pockets and hold on tight, as you could earn millions with just a few cents. Due to their unique characteristics and high demand, currencies can appreciate over time. With just a few currencies, you can strike it rich. However, knowing how to look closely is key, as some examples have special characteristics that can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some currencies can increase in value thanks to numismatics enthusiasts, or coin collectors, who value the coin’s age, composition, minting errors, or even how many are available in circulation.
The 5 currencies that are predicted to increase in value this year
The 1913 Liberty Head five-cent coin
The 1913 Liberty Head nickel is incredibly rare and thus one of the most sought-after currencies among collectors. Finding one in circulation is virtually impossible, as this currency was made in very small batches without the permission of the US Mint. At an auction in 2007, just one of these currencies fetched $5 million.
1794 Loose Hair Dollar
This is the first coin that the US government minted that has a face value. It was minted between 1794–1795. On the front, there is a bust of Lady Liberty, and on the back, there is an eagle enclosed by a wreath. It is believed that between 150 and 200 currencies are still in circulation. One was sold for over $6 million.
1940 Mercury Dime
Due to their scarcity, mercury dimes—especially those with full bands and graded Mint State-67—are becoming more valuable. A single one fetched over $8,000 at an auction.
Saint-Gaudens double eagle
One of the rarest and most valuable US currencies still in circulation is the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. This is one of the few gold currencies that are still in circulation. On the obverse, Lady Liberty is depicted holding an olive branch and a torch against a sunburst, with 46 stars and the Capitol Building in the background. Another way to identify this coin is by the eagle on the reverse, set against a sunburst. In 2021, one of these currencies became the most expensive coin in the world after being sold at an auction for nearly $19 million.
1909-S Indian Head Penny
Some 300,000 currencies were minted between 1859 and 1909, and a few are still in circulation today. On the front, Lady Liberty is featured, and the reverse features the words “One Cent” and a laurel wreath. In 2021, one of them was sold at an auction for $3,400.
Where can you sell these currencies in the US?
Most collectors eventually decide they want to sell some of their coins, whether it’s because they’ve upgraded a few pieces or they’re looking to cash out on a complete collection to focus on a new set. While there are many options out there, not all of them are a good fit for every collection. Some key factors to consider are the value of the items you’re selling, how quickly you need to get paid, and how much time you’re willing to put into the selling process. Here are some of the most popular choices, along with the potential benefits and drawbacks of each.
