USD Index Key to Bitcoin's Potential 127% Surge, Says Analyst

May 17, 2024 at 03:04 pm

Real Vision analyst Jamie Coutts believes the performance of the US dollar against major currencies will impact Bitcoin's price. According to Coutts, Bitcoin could rally significantly if the DXY falls below 101, resulting in a potential 127% surge. On the other hand, an upward move in the DXY could push Bitcoin towards levels seen in February.

US Dollar Index Holds Key to Bitcoin Price Surge, Analyst Predicts 127% Rally

Acclaimed financial analyst Jamie Coutts from Real Vision has asserted that the performance of the US dollar against major currencies will significantly influence the price trajectory of Bitcoin (BTC). Coutts, who commands a substantial following of over 16,300 on X, has identified the US Dollar Index (DXY) as a crucial indicator for Bitcoin's price action.

The DXY, a metric that gauges the value of the US dollar relative to a basket of six dominant global currencies, is currently hovering within a range. According to Coutts, a decline in the DXY of approximately 3% from its current level could trigger a marked rally in Bitcoin. "A break below 101 would be rocket fuel for Bitcoin," Coutts stated.

At the time of writing, the DXY stands at 104.52. Coutts projects that a drop in the DXY would propel Bitcoin upward by an impressive 127%. "Risk assets thrive on dollar weakness. The DXY encapsulates market expectations for liquidity in real-time, and liquidity is on the horizon. Monitor the 101/102 level on the DXY. A breach of that threshold could propel Bitcoin to approximately $150,000 during this cycle," Coutts elaborated.

Earlier in the month, Coutts had cautioned against an opposing scenario, warning that an upswing in the US dollar index could plunge Bitcoin to levels witnessed in February. "If the DXY gains momentum (weakens), the macro/liquidity signal for BTC will be ignited, setting it on a bullish trajectory," Coutts explained. However, he cautioned that "106/107 on the DXY remains a pivotal resistance level, and a breach could potentially trigger a tumble into the low $50,000 range."

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading at $66,189. Coutts' analysis underscores the intricate relationship between the US dollar and Bitcoin, highlighting the importance of monitoring the DXY's movements for insights into Bitcoin's price dynamics.
