Unlocking Move VM on Substrate: Enhanced Smart Contract Capabilities and Parachain Design

Jul 26, 2024 at 05:00 pm

With this innovation, developers may now incorporate the Move Virtual Machine (VM), which enables Substrate blockchains to run Move smart contracts. Additionally, Polkadot now allows anyone to design Move parachains.

Unlocking Move VM on Substrate: Enhanced Smart Contract Capabilities and Parachain Design

In a recent development, Substrate blockchains can now execute Move smart contracts, and Move parachains can be created on Polkadot, thanks to the efforts of the Eiger team. This integration marks a significant step for the blockchain ecosystem, enabling developers to harness the capabilities of Move while working on Substrate-based networks.

Move, a platform-agnostic, safe, and verified programming language, has seen adoption in blockchains like Sui Network and Aptos.

Substrate blockchains can now execute Move smart contracts, and anyone can build Move parachains on Polkadot, thanks to the work of the @eiger_co team. This integration will open new avenues for developers to leverage Move's capabilities while building on Substrate-based networks.

This integration involves converting signed origins into the Move datatype signer, which enables authorized Move account access. The parameters, despite having different names, always relate to the compiled and serialized Move bytecode.

The "execute" extrinsic is designed to handle scenarios involving multiple signers, such as when a smart contract requires signatures from several participants.

Parachain developers can set a lifetime and signer limit for these multiple signer script execution requests in Pallet's configuration. While a deeper examination of gas costs will be covered later, it's important to note that these costs can be optimized when executing or publishing Move bytecode.

The pallet also enables Move smart contract developers to directly transfer tokens on the blockchain, using Substrate's Currency trait internally.

Users can define a 'cheque limit' to specify the maximum units of tokens used during execution. This feature enhances the flexibility and efficiency of Move smart contracts on the Substrate architecture.

As previously reported by Crypto News Flash, Robonomics announced plans to integrate the Polkadot Relay Chain on September 25. This integration will allow Robonomics to leverage Polkadot's advanced security and scalability capabilities.

In related news, Polkadot's Subwallet has seen immense growth, with 1.6 million downloads and 800,000 active users and services, according to the latest figures.

Polkadot's native token, DOT, is currently trading at $5.85, showing a 2.66% increase over the last 24 hours. Despite this recent uptick, DOT has been displaying a sideways trend in the last 30 days.
