Ukraine is considering setting up a National Bitcoin Reserve

The step is a striking turn in the country's crypto policy and follows developments in the United States

The Ukrainian parliament is working on a bill for setting up a National Bitcoin reserve, confirms Yaroslav Zheleznyak, vice chairman of the Finance, tax and customs policy committee. The step follows developments in the United States, where a strategic bitcoin reserve is also being worked on.

"De tekst van het wetsvoorstel over een nationale Bitcoin reserve bevindt zich in de laatste fase van ontwikkeling," zegt Zheleznyak. Eerder dit jaar alludeerde hij al op deze mogelijkheid als onderdeel van bredere crypto wetgeving.

"The text of the bill about a National Bitcoin Reserve is in the final phase of development," says Zheleznyak. Earlier this year, he already alluded to this possibility as part of broader crypto legislation.

In tegenstelling tot de striktere Europese wetgeving, lijkt Oekraïne flexibeler en innovatiever te willen zijn in zijn aanpak van crypto. In het huidige voorstel worden drie opties besproken voor het toezichthoudend orgaan: een nieuw op te richten crypto agency, of bestaande instellingen zoals de Nationale Bank en de Commissie voor Effecten en Beurs.

In contrast to the stricter European legislation, Ukraine seems to want to be more flexible and more innovative in his approach to Crypto. In the current proposal, three options are discussed for the supervisory body: a new Crypto Agency to be established, or existing institutions such as the National Bank and the Commission for Effects and Beurs.

Een eerder wetsvoorstel over crypto werd in april door de relevante parlementscommissie goedgekeurd, maar werd uiteindelijk ingetrokken vanwege politieke hindernissen.

An earlier bill on Crypto was approved by the relevant parliamentary committee in April, but was eventually withdrawn due to political obstacles.

"Helaas werd het wetsvoorstel over crypto niet in de laatste lezing aangenomen en werd het ingetrokken," voegde Zheleznyak eraan toe.

"Unfortunately, the bill on Crypto was not adopted in the last reading and was withdrawn," Zheleznyak added.

De discussie over een Bitcoin reserve duidt volgens analisten op een grote stap vooruit in vergelijking met eerdere bedenkingen van Oekraïense politici over de toekomst van crypto.
