TON Cryptocurrency Soars Amid Speculation of Integration with Telegram Messenger

Apr 30, 2024 at 01:19 pm

The TON cryptocurrency has surged in value, fueled by anticipation of its integration with the popular messenger app Telegram and the issuance of Tether tokens on its blockchain. The convergence of payments, social media, and messaging services in a "super app" has drawn investor attention, and TON fits into this trend. Despite previous failures in bringing crypto to social media, such as Facebook's Libra project, TON's decentralized nature and support from Telegram may offer a new path forward. However, regulatory concerns and user perceptions pose challenges to its widespread adoption.

TON Cryptocurrency Surges as Investors Envision its Integration with Telegram Messaging Service

By Elizabeth Howcroft

Introduction

The cryptocurrency market has witnessed a notable surge in the value of a digital asset known as TON in recent months. Investors are placing their bets on the potential integration of TON with the widely popular Telegram messenger service, which boasts an estimated user base of 900 million individuals.

Telegram's endorsement of TON in September 2022 played a significant role in its current trajectory. The company announced that the TON blockchain and its associated token would serve as its "official Web3 infrastructure." Subsequently, TON disclosed plans to allow the issuance of Tether tokens on its blockchain, enabling Telegram users to seamlessly transfer this stablecoin within the application.

Price Performance

The TON token has experienced a meteoric rise since its inception. According to data from CoinGecko, it has surged from approximately $2.21 a year ago to a peak of $7.63 on April 11th, 2023. This impressive performance has catapulted TON to the 10th position among the most valuable cryptocurrencies, trailing only Dogecoin, the popular memecoin.

Conceptual Promise of Super Apps

The prospect of developing a "super app" or "everything app" that seamlessly integrates payments, shopping, social media, and messaging services has captivated the imaginations of investors worldwide. Inspiration for this concept often stems from successful platforms such as WeChat in China. Within the cryptocurrency realm, this concept is commonly referred to as "SocialFi," an abbreviation of social finance.

Such aspirations motivated Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter in 2022, which was partially funded by Binance. Binance has expressed its intention to explore the potential integration of cryptocurrencies into the Twitter platform. In contrast, Revolut, a UK-based fintech company, has taken the opposite approach, beginning with a financial app and subsequently adding social features.

Factors Driving TON's Popularity

While the allure of TON is intertwined with the broader enthusiasm for super apps, it has also benefited from a general resurgence in the popularity of altcoins, according to Thomas Peuch, CEO of Indigo, a digital asset hedge fund.

"TON has outperformed many of its peers as investors flock to the project due to renewed interest in altcoins and the backing of Telegram," Peuch stated, confirming Indigo's involvement in TON token trading.

Telegram has incorporated a crypto wallet product into TON, known as "The Open Network," boasting over six million monthly users.

Historical Context

Efforts to integrate cryptocurrency payments into social media platforms have not yielded widespread success to date. Facebook, now known as Meta, abandoned its "Libra" cryptocurrency project following fierce opposition from global regulators, who expressed concerns about its potential impact on financial stability and monetary policy.

"The recent foray into crypto payments through Telegram presents a novel use case for the app, but its widespread acceptance and adoption are still in their infancy," commented Robert Le, a senior analyst at PitchBook. He noted an increase in venture capital interest in SocialFi projects.

"The primary challenge lies in changing user perceptions in non-Asian markets, where messaging apps are predominantly viewed as communication tools rather than multifunctional platforms," Le added.

Regulatory Considerations

Ram Gopal, a professor at Warwick Business School, highlighted the "regulatory, technical, and security challenges" associated with integrating cryptocurrencies into social media platforms.

"Regulators may scrutinize how these platforms adhere to existing financial regulations," he explained.

Gopal emphasized that safeguarding users from scams, fraud, and potential losses due to cryptocurrency volatility would be paramount for regulatory bodies.

TON's Evolution

Telegram Messenger initiated the development of TON's blockchain in 2018, raising $1.7 billion through the sale of its associated cryptocurrency. However, the project faced legal challenges from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which alleged that the token sale violated federal securities laws.

In a 2020 settlement with the SEC, Telegram agreed to discontinue the development of TON. Notably, the company did not admit or deny the SEC's allegations.

According to the historical account provided on TON's website, a separate group of developers continued the project after Telegram's withdrawal. TON maintains that it operates as a decentralized entity based on an open-source codebase, without a single controlling authority. A non-profit foundation, registered in Zug, Switzerland, ostensibly supports the project.

A TON spokesperson emphasized the distinct separation between Telegram and TON as entities. The TON Foundation's website indicates that Steve Yun serves as its president, while Andrew Rogovoz, the former CEO of the Russian social media site VK, is a founding member. Rogovoz was present alongside Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov and Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino at a conference in Dubai, where the partnership to issue the stablecoin on the TON blockchain was announced.
