TON Cryptocurrency Soars, Fueled by Telegram Integration and Super Apps Hype
Apr 30, 2024 at 01:10 pm
TON, a cryptocurrency linked to messaging service Telegram, has surged amid investors' optimism about its integration with the app's vast user base. Endorsed as the "official Web3 infrastructure" by Telegram, TON has gained traction as it allows for the issuance of Tether tokens on its blockchain, enabling users to exchange stablecoins within the app. The coin's value has skyrocketed, making it the tenth largest cryptocurrency with $18.3 billion in circulation, reflecting broader interest in the concept of super apps and SocialFi.

TON Cryptocurrency Surges Amid Telegram Integration, Fueling Interest in 'Super Apps'
Introduction
The cryptocurrency market has witnessed a significant surge in the value of TON, a token associated with the Telegram messenger service. This surge is primarily driven by investors' anticipation of Telegram's integration of TON, which could potentially introduce the cryptocurrency to the platform's vast user base of approximately 900 million.
Telegram's Endorsement and Tether Integration
In September 2022, Telegram endorsed TON, announcing that its blockchain and token would become the platform's "official Web3 infrastructure." This endorsement was followed by TON's announcement earlier this month that Tether tokens could also be issued on its blockchain, enabling Telegram users to seamlessly transfer stablecoins within the app.
Price Performance and Market Position
The TON token has experienced a remarkable price surge, reaching a peak of $7.63 on April 11, a significant increase compared to its price of around $2.21 a year earlier, as reported by CoinGecko. With a circulating supply valued at approximately $18.3 billion, TON has ascended to become the 10th largest cryptocurrency, trailing only the memecoin Dogecoin.
The Quest for 'Super Apps'
The concept of "super apps" or "everything apps" has captivated investors, who envision a platform that seamlessly combines payments, shopping, social media, and messaging services. China's WeChat serves as a prominent example of such an app. In the cryptocurrency realm, this concept is often referred to as "SocialFi," an abbreviation for social finance.
Elon Musk and SocialFi
The appeal of TON is intertwined with the broader interest in super apps. However, the token's surge has also benefited from a general revival in altcoins. Thomas Peuch, CEO of digital asset hedge fund Indigo, attributes TON's outperformance to factors such as renewed interest in altcoins and Telegram's backing. Indigo itself has engaged in TON token trading.
TON's Features and Future
Telegram offers a TON-based crypto wallet product with over 6 million monthly users. TON, which stands for "The Open Network," operates on a decentralized, open-source codebase and claims to have no single controlling authority. It is supported by a non-profit foundation headquartered in Zug, Switzerland.
Regulatory Considerations
Efforts to integrate crypto payments into social media have faced regulatory headwinds in the past. Facebook, now known as Meta, discontinued its "Libra" cryptocurrency project due to intense opposition from global regulators, who expressed concerns about its potential impact on financial stability and monetary policy control.
"The recent foray into crypto payments through Telegram introduces a new use case for the app, but its acceptance and adoption are still in the early stages," said PitchBook senior analyst Robert Le. "The main challenge is shifting user perceptions in non-Asian markets, where messaging apps are predominantly seen as communication tools rather than multi-functional platforms."
Warwick Business School professor Ram Gopal emphasizes the "regulatory, technical, and security challenges" posed by such integrations. Regulators may scrutinize these platforms' compliance with existing financial regulations and consider user protection measures to mitigate risks associated with scams, fraud, and cryptocurrency volatility.
TON's History and Development
Telegram Messenger created TON's blockchain in 2018 and raised $1.7 billion through the sale of the associated cryptocurrency. However, the project encountered legal obstacles when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged that the token sale violated federal securities laws.
As part of a 2020 settlement with the SEC, Telegram agreed to discontinue TON's development but neither admitted nor denied the SEC's allegations. Subsequently, an unrelated group of developers assumed the project, picking up where Telegram left off.
TON maintains a decentralized structure with no single controlling authority. The TON Foundation, a non-profit organization, provides support for the project. A spokesperson for TON emphasized the distinct separation between Telegram and TON.
The TON Foundation's president, according to the organization's website, is Steve Yun. Andrew Rogozov, a former CEO of the Russian social media site VK, is listed as a founding member of the foundation on his LinkedIn profile. Rogozov appeared onstage alongside Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov and Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino at a conference in Dubai where the partnership to issue the stablecoin on the TON blockchain was announced.
