The Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) has successfully integrated threshold-Schnorr signatures with onchain Bitcoin block headers, as part of its ongoing Deuterium milestone, according to an announcement on March 8, 2023. This integration will allow ICP smart contracts to directly interact with Bitcoin, enabling a range of new applications.
The integration of threshold-Schnorr signatures is significant as it will allow ICP smart contracts to perform functions such as signing Taproot transactions and supporting decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. This will boost Bitcoin’s compatibility across platforms and applications, opening up new possibilities for development within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
The milestone will particularly benefit emerging protocols like Ordinal inscriptions and the BRC20 standard, which have already seen substantial success in increasing transaction activity on the Bitcoin network. Developers will now have the tools to create more advanced and trustless applications on Bitcoin, leveraging the capabilities of ICP.
“Most Bitcoin meta protocols, like Ordinals and BRC20, utilize Taproot transactions that rely on Schnorr signatures,” said Lomesh Dutta, Vice President of Growth at the Dfinity Foundation. “With threshold-Schnorr, or tSchnorr, ICP smart contracts can now natively sign Bitcoin transactions. This enables developers to explore a wide range of use cases, from creating DeFi lending markets backed by Ordinals to developing infrastructure like decentralized indexers.”
The integration will also expand access to full Bitcoin block headers, up from the previous capability of handling only Bitcoin’s unspent transaction output (UTXO) set. This feature will empower ICP-based projects like Omnity Network and Bioniq to independently verify Bitcoin blocks without relying on external services, enhancing the trustlessness and security of operations across networks.
This milestone not only advances Bitcoin’s integration into the DeFi sector but also positions ICP as a major player in the broader evolution of Bitcoin's role in the decentralized landscape. The Deuterium milestone is seen as a crucial step towards creating a more interconnected and efficient blockchain environment.
