Thinking of tossing your handful of change into a coin collection jar, perhaps consider that thought again

If you're thinking of tossing your handful of change into a coin collection jar, perhaps consider that thought again. Over the counter change has become especially value if you have any U.S. $1 coins from 2007 resting in the palm of your hands.

With $1 coins being wanted for about $900, one rare coin with an error from 2007 may be worth a small fortune. Being termed the 2007 $1 Missing Edge Lettering Thomas Jefferson coin, this rare gem is wanted by many coin collectors.

You need to know what makes this rare $1 coin so special and find some ways to spot it.

Understanding more about the 2007 Thomas Jefferson dollar

During 2007, the Presidential $1 Coin Program had been launched by the U.S. Mint as a way to honor former U.S. presidents. These coins had incuse edge lettering, the date, mintmark, and mottos (“E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust”) inscribed around the edges of the coins, however, nothing was on the face of these coins. There were a handful of coins that escaped the mint and did not have these valuable markings.

While the Thomas Jefferson Presidential dollar was the third coin released in this series, some of these Thomas Jefferson Presidental coins were minted with no edge lettering at all. A minting flaw became classified as the “Missing Edge Lettering” error turning these coins into collectible gems in no time.

To be able to tell the Jefferson error apart from other coins is rather easy since most coins are without this minting error, making the Jefferson error coin scarce and highly sought after. There are tens of thousands of the George Washington coins in circulation, however, thus far the PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) has seen only 1,300 samples of the Jefferson version.

What value will you get for this rare find?

The $1 coin is not worth its face value to collectors who are willing to pay hundreds and thousands depending on the condition of the coin. According to Auction Records & Market Value:

The scarcity of the coin paired with its  historical significance makes it far more valuable than what it’s worth.

Finding the missing letters flaw

Thankfully, the only identifying feature of this coin is easy to spot- no lettering on the coin’s edges.

Citizens should keep an eye out for the:

All normal Presidential $1 coins from 2007 have lettering etched into the edge of the coin. One without this lettering could make you richer. However, edge lettering on worn coins may be faint so a magnifying glass can be used to differentiate a coin with lettering and one without it. Other  $1 coins that are valuable are the Eisenhower Dollar and the Susan B. Anthony Dollar which are worth finding too.

Why is this 2007 $1 find a collector’s item?

The Thomas Jefferson coin is significantly rarer in comparison to other coins. Nevertheless, it is also valueable due to its:

Citizens should regularly check their pockets for rare finds in the form of coins like the 2007 Thomas Jefferson Missing Edge Lettering $1 coin that surely signifies valuable coins hiding in plain sight. Don’t forget to check your 5 cent coins too for the 1913 Liberty Head nickel, as a rare find that could very well be worth $5 Million.
