Tether, Telegram Team Up to Bring USDT to Millions
Apr 23, 2024 at 04:00 am
Tether, the leading stablecoin issuer, has partnered with Telegram to integrate USDT payments into the popular messaging app, enabling users to send and withdraw USDT for free. The collaboration aims to drive mainstream adoption of crypto, leveraging Tether's market dominance and Telegram's 900 million users. To incentivize adoption, the TON Foundation is offering 11 million TON tokens in rewards for liquidity pools, deposits, and withdrawals.

Tether and Telegram Forge Strategic Alliance, Bringing USDT Payments to Millions of Users
In a groundbreaking move that signals a significant stride towards mainstream crypto adoption, Tether, the leading stablecoin issuer, has integrated its USDT stablecoin with Telegram, one of the world's most popular messaging applications.
This strategic partnership, announced at the recent Token2049 conference in Dubai, harnesses the strengths of both industry giants. Tether, with over 70% of the global stablecoin market capitalization, boasts an extensive reach among crypto enthusiasts and institutions. Telegram, on the other hand, commands a vast user base of approximately 900 million users, spanning diverse demographics and regions.
The integration of USDT into Telegram empowers users with the ability to seamlessly send and receive the stablecoin within the app, free of charge. Withdrawals from the Telegram Wallet are also cost-free, further enhancing its user convenience.
This collaboration holds immense potential to accelerate crypto adoption, particularly in regions with restrictive capital controls or strong anti-crypto sentiments. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has revealed that the app is the most downloaded Android wallet in China, a nation with a significant population but strict regulations on cryptocurrencies. The USDT integration could pave the way for wider crypto usage in China.
To foster adoption, the TON Foundation, an independent entity formerly associated with Telegram, has pledged an incentive program worth 11 million TON tokens, equivalent to approximately $66 million. This incentive allocation includes:
- 5 million TON tokens for rewards on USDT/TON liquidity pools on StonFi and Dedust
- 5 million TON tokens for users depositing USDT on the in-app Telegram Wallet
- Free withdrawals to TON from exchanges like OKX, Bybit, and KuCoin until the end of June
The TON Foundation's generous incentives have contributed to TON's remarkable ascent in market capitalization. Since January 1st, TON has surged over 300% from $8 billion to $21 billion, propelling it into the top 10 cryptocurrencies on Coingecko.
However, it is important to acknowledge the potential risks associated with this partnership. Both Tether and Telegram have faced scrutiny from authorities in the past. Tether has been under investigation by U.S. authorities for allegedly facilitating illicit activities, while Telegram's planned token sale was blocked by the SEC.
Despite these concerns, Tether remains undeterred in its pursuit of broader adoption. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino has hinted at the development of a comprehensive tokenization platform, offering features such as full asset ownership and interoperable infrastructure.
The integration of USDT into Telegram represents a significant milestone in the evolution of cryptocurrencies. By bridging the gap between the crypto ecosystem and mainstream messaging applications, this partnership opens new avenues for crypto usage and accelerates the path towards widespread adoption.
