Tether's Stablecoin Supremacy Erodes as Rival Stablecoins Surge in Popularity

May 02, 2024 at 06:01 am

According to market intelligence platform Kaiko Analytics, Tether's dominance in the stablecoin market is facing increasing competition. In a report, Kaiko noted that Tether's market share on centralized exchanges has declined significantly, dropping from 82% to 69% year-to-date, due to the surge of alternative dollar-pegged stablecoins such as FDUSD and USDC.

Tether's Stablecoin Supremacy Erodes as Rival Stablecoins Surge in Popularity

Tether's Stablecoin Dominance Faces Erosion as Rivals Gain Traction

Market intelligence platform Kaiko Analytics has released a comprehensive report, "Tether Loses Market Share," revealing a significant shift in the stablecoin landscape, with new competitors challenging Tether's (USDT) longstanding supremacy.

USDT's Market Share Takes a Hit

Kaiko's analysis indicates that Tether's market share on centralized exchanges (CEXs) has plummeted by 13% year-to-date (YTD). This decline is primarily attributed to the rise of rival dollar-pegged stablecoins, notably FDUSD and USDC.

"USDT's dominance on CEXs has been on a downtrend, dropping from 82% to 69% YTD," observes Kaiko. "This erosion is partially due to increased competition from stablecoins like FDUSD, which benefits from Binance's zero-fee promotions."

USDC Gains Ground, Signaling Preference for Regulation

USDC has also witnessed a surge in its market share, reflecting a growing preference for regulated stablecoin alternatives. Notably, stablecoins issued in the United States now account for 10% of the overall stablecoin trade volume.

Among the top five stablecoins by market capitalization, only Circle's USDC is regulated under state US money transmitter frameworks. Despite this competitive advantage, USDC's share has nevertheless grown from less than 1% in 2020 to an impressive 11% today.

Yield-Bearing Alternatives Emerge as Potential Disruptors

Kaiko highlights the emergence of innovative yield-bearing stablecoins, such as Ethena's USDe, as another potential factor contributing to Tether's waning market dominance.

"Tether's declining market share could also be linked to the availability of innovative yield-bearing alternatives like Ethena's USDe," Kaiko posits. "Since its launch in February, USDe's volume has grown significantly, despite a recent pullback from its all-time high of over $800 million in April."

Tether's Financial Performance Amidst Market Challenges

Despite the challenges posed by emerging competitors, Tether remains a financial powerhouse. According to its 2024 Attestation Report, the company reported a record-breaking $4.52 billion in profits during the first quarter of 2024.

Implications for the Stablecoin Landscape

The resurgence of Tether's competitors signals a dynamic and evolving stablecoin market. While USDT's dominance has been eroded, it remains a significant player. However, the growth of regulated and yield-bearing alternatives suggests a shift in user preferences, potentially diversifying the stablecoin ecosystem.

As new stablecoin solutions emerge, market participants will be keenly observing the ongoing competition and its potential impact on the wider cryptocurrency industry.
