Tether's Massive USDT Creation Fuels Bitcoin Ascend Speculation
May 18, 2024 at 06:00 am
Tether's recent minting of $1 billion in USDT has reignited speculation about Bitcoin's potential surge to new all-time highs. The stablecoin's increased market cap, coupled with Tether's planned investment in Bitcoin, could provide the necessary catalyst for another bull run. Institutional inflows through ETFs continue to play a significant role in Bitcoin's price movement, as evidenced by the recent breakout from the $65,000 support level.

Tether's Massive USDT Creation Fuels Speculation of Bitcoin's Ascent to New Heights
In a significant development that could potentially ignite Bitcoin's next bull run, Tether's Treasury has injected an additional $1 billion worth of USDT, the world's largest stablecoin, into circulation within the past 24 hours. This substantial issuance, bringing the total amount of new USDT minted this year to an astounding $31 billion, has raised eyebrows in the cryptocurrency market.
Industry analysts speculate that this increase in USDT supply could serve as the catalyst for a renewed rally in Bitcoin's price. Historically, the creation of new USDT has coincided with surges in Bitcoin's valuation. As Lookonchain noted on May 17th, Bitcoin's ascent from $27,000 to $73,000 was largely attributed to the influx of newly minted USDT.
Beyond the immediate implications for Bitcoin, Tether has also taken steps to diversify its stablecoin's backing assets. The company has pledged to invest 15% of its net earnings into Bitcoin, a move that could further bolster the cryptocurrency's growth.
According to Bitinfocharts, Tether has amassed over 78,317 BTC, worth approximately $5.18 billion, in its wallet. This substantial Bitcoin holding positions Tether as the seventh-largest Bitcoin owner globally.
The diversification of Tether's reserves into Bitcoin aligns with the company's previous announcement a year ago to increase its exposure to the cryptocurrency.
Meanwhile, institutional investments in Bitcoin continue to play a significant role in its price dynamics. The net positive outflows from U.S. Bitcoin ETFs have extended into a second consecutive week, as per Dune.
Earlier in the year, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) absorbed approximately 75% of the fresh capital flowing into Bitcoin as its price surged above $50,000 on February 15th.
The recent price movements of Bitcoin have reinforced the $65,000 level as a crucial support line. Yesterday's breakthrough on the daily chart suggests that Bitcoin may be poised for further upward momentum.
