Telegram Unveils Seamless Crypto Integration, Empowering Users and Developers
Apr 20, 2024 at 02:28 am
Telegram users can now engage in seamless peer-to-peer interactions with the integration of mini-apps and Tether (USDT) stablecoins. This allows for a convenient introduction to crypto for many users. The stablecoin also benefits developers by facilitating the launch of various business activities on The Open Network's layer-1 blockchain. Telegram continues to roll out its TON-based wallet, expanding opportunities for social viral mechanics and eliminating the need for external app downloads.

Telegram Unveils Seamless Crypto Integration, Empowering Users and Developers
In a significant development, Telegram, the popular messaging application boasting over 900 million users, has integrated mini-apps and Tether (USDT) stablecoins into its platform. This integration marks a pivotal moment, enabling seamless peer-to-peer interactions while introducing many users to cryptocurrency for the first time, often unnoticed.
The integration empowers developers by streamlining the launch of e-commerce platforms, paywalled content, games, and other business ventures on The Open Network (TON), a layer-1 blockchain. Justin Hyun, Director of Investments at TON Foundation, highlighted the benefits of the stablecoin during his interview with Cointelegraph's Ezra Reguerra at the Token2049 conference in Dubai.
According to Hyun, the incorporation of Tether on TON "truly unlocks the creator economy that is already happening in TON and Telegram." Users can now engage in crypto transactions without navigating the complexities of acquiring different cryptocurrencies or tokens.
"The most interesting use cases are the ones that engage in social viral mechanics," Hyun stated. "There are games that are being created on a daily basis that are powered through Telegram mini-apps."
These products are readily accessible without the need for external app downloads, offering clear advantages. Hyun cited the Catizen game as an example. Upon transitioning from another blockchain to TON, the developers witnessed a remarkable surge in users, amassing 2 million in two months, compared to just 600,000 over a year and a half on the previous platform.
Telegram's global reach and native USDT integration address the limitations encountered by regionalized social media platforms. Hyun noted that super apps like WeChat in China, Line in Japan, and KakaoTalk in South Korea have struggled to expand beyond their respective geographical boundaries. TON's global accessibility eliminates the need for local payment gateways. Moreover, Tether enables Telegram to bypass payment restrictions imposed by Google and Apple.
This integration aligns with TON's original vision, which was hindered by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission's opposition to the network's planned initial coin offering in 2020. However, the TON Foundation, established in 2021 by open-source developers who took over the project, has revitalized the network.
The integration of mini-apps and Tether on Telegram represents a significant advancement, seamlessly integrating cryptocurrency into the platform's vast user base while empowering developers to create innovative applications on the TON blockchain. This development marks a milestone in the adoption of blockchain technology, bringing the benefits of cryptocurrency to a wider audience.
