Sui Token Distribution Draws Scrutiny Amidst Centralization Concerns
May 07, 2024 at 07:50 pm
Sui project faces criticism over tokenomics, with concerns raised about the centralization of token supply in the hands of founders. Justin Bons, founder of Cyber Capital, alleges that over 80% of the tokens are controlled by the founders, with a lack of transparency and proof of locked tokens adding to the unease among stakeholders.

Sui Tokenomics Raise Scrutiny Amidst Concerns Over Centralization
The Sui blockchain project's tokenomics model has come under scrutiny from investors and market analysts due to concerns over the concentration of a significant portion of SUI tokens in the hands of early investors and founders. Despite assurances from project officials that the majority of the circulating supply remains locked, the lack of tangible proof to substantiate these claims has fueled unease among stakeholders.
Mounting Questions and Allegations of Centralization
Over the past month, numerous Twitter users have raised questions regarding Sui's token distribution. A post by Justin Bons, founder of Cyber Capital, ignited widespread attention and criticism. In the post, Bons accused the Sui founders of exercising control over more than 80% of the token supply.
According to Bons, despite Sui's claim of a capped supply of 10 billion tokens, the majority (over 8 billion) is currently being staked, with over 84% of the staked supply held by the founders. The remaining 5 billion tokens, categorized as "unallocated," are also reportedly controlled by these early investors and founders.
Lack of Transparency and Unverified Locking Mechanisms
The absence of evidence that these tokens are securely locked in smart contracts has raised concerns about the potential for the team to access and manipulate the supply at any time. As Bons emphasized, "There is no locking mechanism for this SUI on-chain at all; it can be moved!"
In response, the Sui team issued a statement attempting to address the "unallocated supply" concerns. They stated that this portion of the supply (5 billion SUI) is held by the Sui Foundation, which they claim is the largest holder of locked SUI tokens. These tokens, they asserted, are earmarked for supporting developers, advancing the Move programming language, enhancing network security, and expanding the Sui ecosystem.
However, the Sui team's response has raised further questions. As Bons pointed out, "Custodians do not usually provide lock-ins!" This statement requires users to rely solely on the assurances of the Sui Foundation and custodians that the tokens will not be unlocked prematurely.
Circulating Supply Expansion and Token Value Decline
Adding to the concerns, the Sui project experienced a significant expansion in its circulating supply during April due to unlocks for investors and early contributors. Unsurprisingly, the token's price faced downward pressure, plummeting nearly 50% from $2 to around $1 per SUI throughout April.
Call for Transparency and Accountability
The concerns raised about Sui's tokenomics have highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in blockchain projects. Investors and market participants expect project officials to provide clear and verifiable information regarding token distribution and management.
The absence of such transparency can erode trust and undermine the long-term value of a project. It is crucial for the Sui team to address these concerns promptly and effectively to restore confidence and demonstrate their commitment to responsible token management practices.
