Steak 'n Shake now accepts bitcoin payments

May 13, 2025 at 01:22 am

Beginning Friday, May 16, Steak ‘n Shake’s 393 U.S  locations will accept this form of cryptocurrency payment

Steak 'n Shake now accepts bitcoin payments

Steak 'n Shake is now accepting Bitcoin at all of its U.S. locations, the chain announced Monday.

The initiative will begin Friday, May 16, and will see 393 Steak 'n Shake restaurants across the country start accepting the cryptocurrency for payment.

"Our goal is to utilize Bitcoin at all locations, including all international units. Each country will announce its own launch date," Steak 'n Shake CEO Dan Edwards said in a statement.

The fast-food chain first hinted at its Bitcoin plans with a cryptic social media post.

"The movement is just beginning," the post read. "Steak n' Shake accepting Bitcoin payments at all locations starting May 16, making the cryptocurrency available to our more than 100 million customers. Each country will announce its own launch date. Get ready to fry in the future. Ben and Jerry's, Chipotle, and Subway all accept Bitcoin. Now, add Steak 'n Shake to the list."

Steak 'n Shake's adoption of Bitcoin follows a string of other fast-food chains, such as Ben and Jerry's, Chipotle, and Subway, who have begun accepting the cryptocurrency at their restaurants.

Earlier this year, Steak 'n Shake announced it was switching to beef tallow as its main cooking oil at all of its restaurants. The move was preferred by a subset of the Bitcoin community, who believe that the mineral oil used in most commercial cooking products is unhealthy and contributes to environmental problems.

The move was also championed by Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been a vocal critic of the food industry's use of seed oils.

"I'm so grateful to Steak 'n Shake for making this healthy and delicious change," Kennedy said in a statement. "This is a major victory for all who are concerned about the health of our families and the future of our planet."

After the switch to tallow was announced, rumors of a Bitcoin integration began circulating online. Many users pointed out the congruency of the rumors with Steak 'n Shake's previous crypto integration.

In 2021, the chain integrated blockchain technology to create a new type of burger, the "limited edition Blockchain Burger." The product was a limited-time offering that was available for purchase at select Steak 'n Shake restaurants.

The Blockchain Burger was a double patty burger with cheese, bacon, and onion rings. It was also served with a side of fries and a choice of soft drink. The burger was priced at $10.99.

To purchase the Blockchain Burger, customers could scan a QR code on the restaurant's menu or order it directly through the Steak 'n Shake website or mobile app. After placing their order, customers would be redirected to a third-party cryptocurrency processing platform, where they could pay for their meal using Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency.

Once the payment was processed, customers would receive a confirmation email or text message. They could then pick up their order at the restaurant or have it delivered to their door.

The Blockchain Burger was a hit with customers and helped to generate a lot of buzz for Steak 'n Shake. The chain decided to integrate Bitcoin at all of its U.S. locations in 2025 as part of a broader initiative to offer customers more payment options and stay ahead of the competition in the fast-food industry.

"We are always looking for ways to improve the customer experience and provide our guests with the best possible service," Edwards said. "We believe that offering Bitcoin as a payment option is a natural progression for our brand and will appeal to a younger generation of consumers who are familiar with and utilize cryptocurrency regularly."

"At Steak 'n Shake, we're constantly innovating to bring our customers the best food and service possible," the company added on Twitter. "That's why we're excited to announce that we'll be accepting Bitcoin at all of our U.S. locations starting May 16."

"Stay tuned for more updates as we fry up the future of food and cryptocurrency together."
