Startup, Equity Products, and Wall Street: A Tokenized Future?

Jul 10, 2025 at 07:50 pm

Exploring the intersection of startups, equity products, and Wall Street, with a focus on tokenized equities and venture capital in the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Startup, Equity Products, and Wall Street: A Tokenized Future?

The dynamics between startups, equity products, and Wall Street are constantly evolving. Tokenized equities and Bitcoin-focused ventures are shaking up the traditional landscape. This blog post will delve into these exciting developments, with a focus on Backed's xStocks and Ego Death Capital's Bitcoin ecosystem investments.

Backed and the Rise of Tokenized Equities

Backed, a startup founded by Adam Levi, is making waves with its tokenized equity product, xStocks. Launched on June 30, xStocks allows users to trade tokenized versions of stocks like Microsoft and Apple directly from partnered crypto exchange accounts. This product's popularity is evident in the rapid growth of wallets holding xStocks on Solana, jumping from 4,400 on July 3 to over 33,300 on July 5.

Levi believes that tokenized equities are gaining momentum because they're seen as the next big thing after stablecoins and the best way to scale crypto. He also points to a generational shift, with younger investors preferring tokenized stocks over traditional bank notes and real stocks. Backed's team, based in Zug, Switzerland, is expanding globally, focusing on legal compliance and technical development.

xStocks started with 60 tokenized equities and is expected to expand further. The upcoming xStocks dashboard hints at a standalone platform for managing tokenized equity assets, including portfolio tracking, on-chain trading UI, and bridging options.

Ego Death Capital's Bitcoin Bet

Ego Death Capital, a venture capital firm, has closed its second fund at $100 million, dedicated to supporting early-stage startups building on the Bitcoin blockchain. This fund focuses on emerging application layers like the Lightning Network, Fedimint, and Discreet Log Contracts.

Lyn Alden, a general partner at Ego Death Capital, emphasizes that they are investing in businesses that treat Bitcoin as infrastructure, not just a trade. Recent investments include Relai, LN Markets, and Roxom. This highlights a growing trend of venture capital recognizing Bitcoin as a secure foundation for real-world applications.

Synthesizing the Trends

The rise of tokenized equities through startups like Backed and the focused investment in the Bitcoin ecosystem by firms like Ego Death Capital point to a significant shift. Startups are leveraging blockchain technology to create new financial products and services, while venture capital is increasingly recognizing the potential of Bitcoin as a foundational layer for innovation. The fact that Backed’s founders rebounded from a prior DAO failure shows resilience and adaptability, critical traits for success in this dynamic landscape.

The Future is Now (and Maybe Tokenized)

It's clear that the intersection of startups, equity products, and Wall Street is being redefined. Whether it's trading tokenized Apple stock or building on the Bitcoin blockchain, the future of finance is looking increasingly decentralized and innovative. Who knows, maybe someday soon we'll all be trading fractional shares of our favorite startups using crypto. One thing's for sure: it's going to be a wild ride!
