StarkWare: Six years of pure innovation for scalability

Jul 17, 2024 at 02:20 am

STARKs, Validium, proof aggregation, Cairo, recursive proving, L3, and more—all come from the brilliant (and very humble ?) minds of our team and are now industry standards.

StarkWare: Six years of pure innovation for scalability

Founded in 2018, Starkware is a leading company in the blockchain industry, specializing in developing cryptographic-proof systems utilizing ZK-STARK technology to design innovative solutions for scaling blockchains securely and privately. Their primary goal is to build a faster, safer Ethereum layer-2 blockchain using ZK-STARK technology.

A key highlight in the company's journey was the launch of Cairo, their programming language, in 2020. This marked a significant step in the company's development.

In June 2020, StarkWare introduced its first technology - the StarkEx, an in-house scaling engine used on Ethereum.

Later, in November 2021, StarkNet's Alpha was released on Mainnet, expanding the company's presence in the blockchain space.

In February, StarkNet launched its native token, STRK, with a total circulating supply of 2 billion STRK. The company also announced that STRK staking will be available in Q4 of this year.

Applications of StarkWare

With Starkware's STARK technology, it has become possible to scale a wide range of use cases on the blockchain. Some of these use cases include:

The Future of StarkWare

The team is set to introduce more innovative solutions, with two new versions scheduled for the last two quarters, enabling the Starknet community to perform faster transactions for free, enhance the developer experience, and increase the congestion threshold.

Beyond these updates, here's what else the team will be working on in the coming months:

Finally, the Stwo Prover is a new open-source prover that Starkware is currently working on. It will implement the new Circle STARK protocol and several other optimizations, unlocking the full potential of the very efficient prime field M31. The company will be releasing it for everyone in the zk-proof and blockchain spaces to benefit everyone.

Starknet developers can use an optimized proving experience on all fronts, thanks to the open-source Stwo Prover, which will be faster than the current solutions. This translates to faster, lower-cost transactions for users.
