Starknet Soars as a Major Force in Ethereum's Layer 2 Ecosystem
Apr 12, 2024 at 03:05 pm
Starknet is gaining momentum in Ethereum's Layer 2 ecosystem, ranking among the most active L2s. With recent record-high throughput and a planned STRK token launch, it's gaining attention. Starknet's open-sourcing of its tech stack further indicates its commitment to transparency and decentralization. Competition is intensifying among Ethereum L2s, with zkSync Era emerging as the most active and Base ranking high in TVL. Arbitrum and Optimism remain dominant in terms of TVL, but Starknet is positioning itself as a formidable contender with its open-source approach and upcoming token release.

Starknet Emerges as a Force in Ethereum's Layer 2 Ecosystem
Starknet, an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) protocol, is rapidly gaining traction, solidifying its position as a major player in the highly competitive L2 landscape. This surge in activity is driven by a combination of technological advancements and strategic maneuvers, positioning Starknet as a formidable contender in the race for L2 dominance.
Record-Breaking Throughput and Token Anticipation
On September 3rd, Starknet achieved a milestone with a record-high throughput of 9 transactions per second (TPS), as per data from L2beat. This surge in activity was spurred by Braavos, a Starknet wallet provider, accidentally publishing an article hinting at the imminent launch of the long-awaited STRK token.
The article's premature preview, titled "Why STRK will be Different from Other Tokens," was quickly deleted, but not before eagle-eyed social media users captured screenshots. The anticipation surrounding the token's release has undoubtedly contributed to Starknet's recent surge in popularity.
Starknet has also ranked among the top five Ethereum protocols in terms of burn rate over the past seven days, according to Ultra Sound Money. This translates to the permanent destruction of 415 ETH, a testament to the network's growing adoption.
Heating Up the L2 Landscape
Starknet's rise to prominence has intensified the competition among Ethereum L2s. While Arbitrum and Optimism have traditionally dominated the L2 scene, the emergence of zkSync Era in March and Polygon zkEVM in the same month has significantly altered the competitive dynamics.
zkSync Era has emerged as the most active L2, processing 29.1 million transactions in the past 30 days, closely rivaling Ethereum mainnet's 30.6 million transactions over the same period. Era also ranks third in total value locked (TVL) with $389 million.
Base, Coinbase's OP Stack-based Layer 2, is another noteworthy entrant, ranking fourth in TVL with $383 million just one month after its general access launch. Base briefly surpassed Era in terms of throughput two weeks ago, fueled by the initial frenzy surrounding Friend Tech, a social trading app built on the network.
However, Arbitrum and Optimism continue to dominate L2 TVL, holding a combined 80% market share, with $5.2 billion and $2.5 billion, respectively.
Starknet's Open-Source Embrace
In a move that further solidifies its long-term commitment, Starknet announced on September 6th that its entire tech stack is now open-source, following the release of version 0.12.2 to mainnet on September 5th. This decision aligns with the project's broader vision of transparency and community engagement.
The open-sourcing of Starknet's prover, the network's core engine, on September 1st, was seen as a strong indication that the long-awaited Starknet token is nearing its release. In a blog post published in February, the team stated that the prover's open-sourcing would occur "right before Starknet will be ready for full decentralization."
Conclusion
Starknet's consistent growth, record-breaking throughput, and strategic open-source move have propelled the platform into the forefront of Ethereum's L2 ecosystem. As competition in the L2 space continues to intensify, Starknet is well-positioned to maintain its momentum and establish itself as a leading solution for scaling the Ethereum network.
The upcoming release of the STRK token is expected to further fuel Starknet's adoption, providing users with a native asset for governance and network participation. With its robust technology, growing community, and strategic roadmap, Starknet is poised to play a significant role in the future of blockchain scalability.
