Stablecoin Scaries: Price Manipulation and Exploits Shaking DeFi
Jun 26, 2025 at 07:10 pm
Stablecoins are facing increased scrutiny as exploits and price manipulation tactics create turbulence in the DeFi space. What's going on, and how can we protect ourselves?

The world of stablecoins isn't always so stable. Recent exploits and price manipulation schemes are rocking decentralized finance (DeFi), leaving users and protocols scrambling. Let's dive into the chaos and see what's shaking.
DeFi Protocol Resupply Hit by $9.6M Price Manipulation Exploit
Just recently, DeFi protocol Resupply got walloped by a price manipulation attack on its wstUSR market, resulting in a hefty $9.6 million loss. Blockchain security firm Cyvers pinpointed the issue: the attacker exploited a price manipulation bug in the ResupplyPair contract by inflating the share price. This allowed them to borrow $10 million reUSD with minimal collateral. Ouch.
Cyvers noted the attacker's funding source was Tornado Cash, and the stolen funds were swapped to Ether (ETH) and scattered across multiple addresses. Resupply quickly paused the affected contracts to prevent further damage, promising a full post-mortem analysis soon.
Lessons Learned: Security in the Spotlight
This incident shines a glaring light on the security vulnerabilities plaguing DeFi protocols, especially those dealing with synthetic assets and oracle-dependent mechanisms. Security experts recommend proper input validation, oracle checks, and rigorous edge-case testing to prevent such attacks. Real-time anomaly monitoring and sanity checks in lending logic could also be game-changers.
zkLend Shuts Down After Exploit, Returns Funds
In another blow, lending protocol zkLend is throwing in the towel after a February security breach. The exploit drained around 3,300 ETH (roughly $9.5 million at the time) due to a precision rounding flaw in their Starknet contracts. The team stated that the loss of user confidence, combined with ZEND's delisting from Bybit and KuCoin, made recovery impossible. They are now winding down operations and directing their remaining $200,000 treasury to a fund for affected users. They even plan to open-source their audited codebase, so hopefully someone can learn from their mistakes.
World Liberty Financial: A Stablecoin with Political Backing
Amidst all this turmoil, World Liberty Financial, a crypto platform backed by President Trump, is trying to make a splash. They are focusing on transparency and financial inclusion, promising to release the first audit report regarding their stablecoin. The aim is to validate the coverage of the stablecoin and ensure the dollar reserves are reliable. The platform also plans to launch an app to make crypto more accessible to retail investors. Whether this is just a political stunt or something of value remains to be seen.
The Bigger Picture: Crypto Hacks on the Rise
These incidents are just the tip of the iceberg. Crypto security firm CertiK reported that over $2.1 billion had already been stolen through hacks and exploits in 2025. Hackers are also shifting tactics, increasingly using social engineering to gain access.
My Two Sats: A Call for Vigilance
The stablecoin landscape is evolving, and not always in a good way. While innovation is exciting, these exploits highlight the critical need for robust security measures and transparency. Investors and users must remain vigilant and do their due diligence before diving into new protocols. It’s a wild west out there, so strap on your boots and keep your eyes peeled.
So, what’s the takeaway? The world of stablecoins is anything but stable right now. But hey, at least it keeps things interesting, right? Stay safe out there, crypto cowboys and cowgirls!
