Spot Ethereum ETFs Experience Record-Breaking Outflows

Aug 23, 2024 at 10:00 am

The longest stretch of uninterrupted outflows since its introduction on July 23 has been five days, as spot Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) headquartered in the US have reported.

Spot Ethereum ETFs Experience Record-Breaking Outflows

The record-breaking outflows from Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States highlight a substantial decrease in investor interest amid a drying investment landscape.

Since their introduction on July 23, spot Ether ETFs based in the US have reported five days of continuous outflows, the longest period observed to date.

As of August 21, Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE) outflows have reached $2.5 billion, significantly exceeding the investments made by the nine spot Ether ETFs that were recently approved.

Daily Outflows Persist for ETHE, August 12th as an Exception

With the exception of August 12, when the Grayscale fund did not report any net flows, ETHE has consistently reported daily outflows, according to Farside Investors data.

During the five days between August 15 and 21, spot Ether ETFs lost $92.2 million, marking the largest outflow streak among any asset class.

Around this time, Grayscale's ETHE reported a loss of $158.6 million, which was partially offset by smaller inflows into the Bitwise Ethereum ETF (ETHW), the Fidelity Ethereum Fund (FETH), and the BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA).

In contrast, the Grayscale Ethereum Mini Trust (ETH) has maintained $231.9 million in positive flows since its debut and has not experienced any outflows.

On August 20, ETHA garnered $1 billion in net inflows, becoming the first spot Ether ETF to achieve this milestone. At the time of writing, there is a net outflow of $458.5 million from spot Ether ETFs.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs Attract $17.5 Billion Since January

In comparison, spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States have seen $17.5 billion in net inflows since their launch in January 2024. Despite the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust losing $19.6 billion, the spot BTC ETFs still managed to remain in the green.

Additionally, the spot Bitcoin ETFs have reported positive flows for eight out of the past ten days. On August 20, the aggregate inflows into the Bitcoin ETFs reached $88 million, marking the highest level observed in two weeks, according to data from Farside Investors.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ranks first among the ETFs, having received $55.4 million in net capital since its introduction in January, contributing to the overall net inflow of $20.5 billion.
