Spot Bitcoin ETFs See Historic Outflows Ahead of Halving

Apr 18, 2024 at 05:26 pm

Net outflows for spot bitcoin ETFs reached $165 million on Wednesday, marking the first negative flow for Bitwise’s BITB since its inception and the longest outflow streak for a month. While BlackRock’s IBIT registered net inflows of $18.1 million, Grayscale’s GBTC and Ark Invest’s ARKB recorded substantial outflows of $133.1 million and $42.7 million, respectively. Combined U.S. spot bitcoin ETF net outflows totaled $314.8 million over four consecutive trading days, leading to an overall decline in trading volume since March 12.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs Witness Historic Outflows Preceding Bitcoin Halving

The cryptocurrency market has been experiencing a significant shift in sentiment, with spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) witnessing a prolonged period of net outflows. On Wednesday, Bitwise's BITB ETF, which has been a key player in the space since its launch in January, recorded daily net outflows of $7.3 million, marking the first instance of negative flows since its inception. This development follows a broader decline in spot bitcoin ETF inflows, with the combined funds experiencing a streak of four consecutive trading days of net outflows totaling $314.8 million. This represents the longest outflow streak witnessed by the sector in a month.

BlackRock's IBIT ETF, a fund managed by the world's largest asset manager, stands as a notable exception, registering net inflows of $18.1 million on Wednesday. However, this represents a fraction of its historical daily average of around $230 million. Conversely, Grayscale's converted GBTC fund and Ark Invest's ARKB ETF experienced substantial net outflows of $133.1 million and $42.7 million, respectively. The remaining spot bitcoin ETFs recorded zero net flows on Wednesday, leading to a combined total of $165 million in net outflows.

The recent outflow trend marks a significant departure from the robust inflows witnessed by spot bitcoin ETFs earlier this year. On March 12, the combined funds recorded a record net daily inflow of $1.05 billion. This surge coincided with bitcoin reaching its latest all-time high of $73,836. However, the cryptocurrency's subsequent 17% decline from that peak has coincided with the downturn in ETF inflows.

Despite the recent outflows, the overall picture for spot bitcoin ETFs remains positive. Since their launch, the funds have attracted net inflows totaling $12.27 billion, a testament to the growing demand for regulated bitcoin investment vehicles. BlackRock, Fidelity, Franklin Templeton, and Valkyrie's spot bitcoin ETFs are the only funds yet to experience daily net outflows.

The decline in spot ETF inflows has been accompanied by a notable decrease in trading volume. On Wednesday, the spot bitcoin ETFs generated $3.5 billion in trading volume, led by BlackRock's IBIT at $1.8 billion. Grayscale's GBTC and Fidelity's FBTC generated $764 million and $525 million, respectively. However, daily trading volume has declined significantly since reaching a record $9.9 billion on March 5, when bitcoin first broke past its prior cycle peak of around $69,000.

As the market grapples with these shifting dynamics, bitcoin's fourth halving event rapidly approaches. Scheduled for April 20, the halving will mark the end of the current bitcoin issuance cycle and will result in a 50% reduction in the block reward for miners. This event has historically coincided with significant price increases for bitcoin.

Analysts at research and brokerage firm Bernstein have expressed optimism in the post-halving outlook for bitcoin, reiterating a target of $150,000 by the end of 2025. Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan has also expressed a bullish view, citing underestimated long-term demand for bitcoin and the potential for increased allocations from the wealth management industry. Conversely, Coinify CEO Rikke Staer has suggested the halving could be a "sell the news" event, leading to increased supply from less efficient miners forced to sell their holdings.

The upcoming halving and the evolving sentiment surrounding spot bitcoin ETFs will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of the cryptocurrency market in the coming months. As investors navigate this dynamic landscape, it is crucial to consider both the potential opportunities and risks associated with these developments.
