Recently, there are rumors that the airdrop of Soneium might be approaching. In reality, it has been talked about since August 2024, when Sony Block Solutions Labs announced the Soneium project.

Recently, there have been rumors circulating about the upcoming airdrop of Soneium. In actuality, discussions concerning the airdrop have been ongoing since August 2024, when Sony Block Solutions Labs unveiled the Soneium project.
Despite ample speculation, no official confirmation has yet been made. Notably, even on the main Soneium X profile, where the launch announcement was made, there is still no mention of a possible airdrop.
Will Soneium truly be releasing an airdrop to its community?
Theoretically, the airdrop will be used to distribute Soneium tokens, the project’s main cryptocurrency.
As of today, there is no sign of this crypto, even though the mainnet has been operational for several months. Along with the mainnet, several bridges and tokens have already been activated.
Some sources suggest that the snapshot for airdrop eligibility might be approaching, despite the date remaining undisclosed. However, it’s crucial to note that the airdrop will only be allocated to those included in the snapshot, with no further distribution planned.
To learn how to participate, you can refer to the guide published on this same site several months ago.
Other sources indicate that May 2025 could be a suitable time for taking the snapshot.
In the last few weeks, the Soneium team has been highly active, launching several initiatives.
The Soneium Network
Soneium is a new layer-2 for Ethereum, developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs.
This scalability solution is built on Optimism’s OP stack and has already achieved a TVL of over $120 million in DeFi, comparable to TON.
However, it’s not yet a decentralized network, and it’s possible that when it becomes decentralized, the governance token will be launched, potentially distributed through an airdrop.
The project is aiming for decentralization, so it’s quite likely that a governance token will be launched sooner rather than later. Nonetheless, details about a potential airdrop are still unavailable.
If the direction of the Sony Block Solutions Labs project is truly towards decentralization, then it’s highly probable that a governance token will be launched. However, if the company wants to retain control of the project, it’s possible they will never introduce a native cryptocurrency, similar to another famous Ethereum layer-2: Base by Coinbase.
As of now, not only is the launch of the governance token unknown, but also how it will be distributed and to whom.
Still, it seems likely that the governance token will be launched and distributed.
The governance token
In decentralized projects, governance tokens are crucial for voting.
In fact, only with governance tokens can legitimate votes be cast in a decentralized system. Therefore, any project aiming for a decentralized system capable of evolving must utilize a governance token.
The alternatives are either not to decentralize the project, as Sony Block Solutions Labs could do in theory, or to make the evolution very slow and complicated, which is not suitable for projects like Soneium.
Generally, governance tokens are not simply put up for sale after creation, but are often distributed to the community members who have already participated in the project’s development during its centralized stage.
The case of Soneium from this perspective is interesting, as it seems likely that not only will a governance token be created sooner rather than later, but it will also be distributed to the community via airdrop.
The latest news on Soneium
Recently, the project announced several new developments.
One of these is Assemble on Soneium, a global initiative that rewards real usage. It is a community initiative promoted by Superboard, starting on April 16th and ending on May 15th.
It is a game that allows you to earn points by completing a mix of single and repeatable on-chain missions throughout the ecosystem.
Another is the Fast Finality Layer, based on Astar Network, AltLayer, and EigenLayer, to improve transaction finality.
Aims to provide an additional layer of security with a finalization time of less than 10 seconds to serve apps that require high security requirements and low latency.
Interesting is the support obtained from JASRAC, the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers, and Publishers, as a blockchain network for the Creator DX platform, KENDRIX.
This peak of activity suggests that the project is ready for the next big step, even if it might still be a bit early to imagine reaching a decentralization based on a governance token.
