Solana (SOL) Undergoes Its Biggest-Ever Upgrade with the Introduction of Alpenglow
May 23, 2025 at 01:04 am
Solana is set to undergo what developers are calling the most significant upgrade in its history, with the introduction of a new consensus protocol named Alpenglow.
Solana is set to undergo what developers are calling the most significant upgrade in its history, with the introduction of a new consensus protocol named Alpenglow.
Unveiled by Anza, a development studio spun out of Solana Labs, the proposal seeks to replace Solana's existing Proof of History and TowerBFT systems with a streamlined, high-performance architecture featuring two new components: Votor and Rotor.
Alpenglow: Huge improvements to speed and reliability
Votor, short for "Voting Component," is designed to handle block finalization with remarkable efficiency. Unlike TowerBFT, which requires multiple rounds of node gossip to reach consensus, Votor employs a faster, direct communication method that allows blocks to be notarized in as little as 100 to 150 milliseconds. The system supports parallel voting tracks, finalizing blocks in one round if 80% of the stake approves or in two rounds with 60% approval.
Rotor, the second component, revamps Solana's current Turbine protocol for data propagation. It retains Turbine's erasure-coding method but optimizes the relay process by reducing the number of hops and improving bandwidth allocation based on validator stake. This ensures faster and more reliable transmission of transaction data across the network.
Together, Votor and Rotor aim to eliminate the complexity and latency introduced by Solana's existing consensus stack. The Alpenglow upgrade promises to deliver near-instant transaction finality, a crucial feature for real-time applications like decentralized finance, gaming, and social media tools.
Anza developers Quentin Kniep, Kobi Sliwinski, and Roger Wattenhofer say that the Alpenglow upgrade will be the biggest change in the Solana protocol's history:
"We believe that the release of Alpenglow will be a turning point for Solana. It’s the biggest change to Solana’s core protocol since, well, ever."
While there is no official launch date for Alpenglow, the whitepaper marks a bold bet on speed and simplicity as Solana's defining features in the increasingly competitive Layer 1 landscape.
SOL price action: $220 in sight?
Solana's native token, SOL, has responded positively to the Alpenglow news, with market analysts eyeing significant price milestones. Prominent chartist Pentoshi noted that SOL appears poised to challenge a key resistance level. "A close above that would be very bullish and likely lead towards $220," he stated on X.
Similarly, analyst Crypto Chase projected a potential rally to $220+, contingent on a "fake out -> rinse longs -> reclaim key level" scenario.
Adding to the bullish sentiment, the CoinCodex Solana price prediction forecasts that SOL could reach new all-time highs, peaking at approximately $360 by December 2025.
As anticipation builds for the Alpenglow rollout, all eyes will be on whether Solana can deliver on its promise of unmatched speed and scalability, potentially reshaping the dynamics of the blockchain ecosystem.
