The heavy hitters include Bonk (BONK), Dogwifhat (WIF), and several other, more recent tokens, such as Popcat (POPCAT), Moo Deng (MOODENG)

Solana (SOL) has become a breeding ground for new memecoins, thanks to the competitive nature of the blockchain and the enthusiasm of crypto traders. Several memecoins have seen massive gains in a short span of time, leading to a shift in the crypto market landscape.
Solana Meme Coins Making a Comeback
Solana's meme coin scene has seen a revival, with several new tokens hitting the market and garnering significant attention. Among these are Bonk (BONK), Dogwifhat (WIF), Popcat (POPCAT), Moo Deng (MOODENG), and Smoking Chicken Fish (SCF).
This meme euphoria has propelled Solana's Popcat to new price heights, making the coin more accessible to a wider audience during price discovery.
After reaching an all-time peak of $1.47 on October 7 in a trading volume-fueled rally, Popcat faced a steep decline the following day. On October 8, the coin dropped from $1.47 to $1.24, marking a 16% retracement from its recent price milestone.
However, Popcat still boasts a market cap of over $1 billion, securing the third position among Solana's meme coins in terms of global market capitalization. Notably, WIF, the leading Solana meme token, also slipped below a key support level of $2.50.
Meme Coins Surpassing Regular Altcoins
As the meme coin hype intensifies, social media mentions have surged to levels comparable to those seen in March 2024. This phenomenon has piqued the interest of veteran crypto investors and personalities, including Chris Burniske, a co-founding member of Placeholder, a prominent venture capital firm in New York.
Highlighting the mass appeal of memecoins this year, Burniske pointed out that the “tendency to trigger” serves as the strongest narrative in explaining the success of memecoins, which outperformed Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Real World Assets (RWAs) in Q1 of 2024. Moreover, large-cap meme cryptos outperformed top altcoins in yearly terms.
In light of this, Burniske likened the current meme currency hype to the remarkable NFT boom in 2021. “The cultural relevance some NFT collections garnered in 2021 will be surpassed by some memecoins,” Burniske predicted.
Solana Founder on the Meme Coin Phenomenon
Following this, Solana (SOL) co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko shared his perspective on the role of memes in the crypto market's success this year. According to his assessment, the current bull cycle is driven 90% by memes and only 10% by the actual product or utility.
“I think previous cycles were also 90% meme 10% product. My theory is that memecoins today have completely absorbed the meme energy that drove other cycles, like DeFi summer. Now each product has to make it purely on value. If that’s the case, it’s a good thing for the industry.”
Solana's co-founder, Anatoly Yakovenko, proposed a theory in a recent statement: “My theory is that memecoins today have completely absorbed the meme energy that drove other cycles, like DeFi summer.” Fortunately, this market trend seems to be a form of quality control for regular altcoins and DeFi products, which “now have to make it purely on value.”
Solana's memecoins section saw a collective value of $9.45 billion, after enduring a 1.5% price decrease over the past 24 hours. The longevity of these tokens is typically influenced by demand in speculative markets, as more crypto traders opt to use leverage for potentially greater gains.
For instance, Popcat and Dogwifhat have a strong presence in the Derivatives markets. Dogwifhat generates nearly $2 billion daily, with Binance handling half of the Derivatives volume.
Popcat recorded $976 million in trades over the past 24 hours, but its record-high OI funding rate of 0.1213% suggests that speculative interest may not have yet reached its peak.
