Solana Foundation Urged to Incentivize Testnet Amid Network Woes, Developer Proposes SOL Rewards

Apr 17, 2024 at 03:36 pm

Hardhat Chad, the anonymous creator of the Ore project on Solana, has suggested that the Solana Foundation offer SOL rewards to incentivize testnet activity. This suggestion emerged after the Solana network experienced severe congestion and a high transaction failure rate. Chad argues that incentives could encourage users to engage in testing and identify potential issues, while the community's response to the proposal has been mixed.

Solana Foundation Urged to Incentivize Testnet Activity Amid Network Congestion Woes

In the wake of Solana's recent network congestion issues, which resulted in transaction failure rates soaring to 75%, a prominent blockchain developer has proposed that the Solana Foundation offer rewards to incentivize testnet activity.

Hardhat Chad, the pseudonymous creator of the Ore project, argued that such incentives could motivate users to actively engage in testing new features and protocols, thereby improving the platform's performance and identifying potential issues before they affect the mainnet.

"If Solana wants to incentivize testnet activity, SOL token rewards should be provided," Chad wrote in a post on the X social platform.

Chad's suggestion sparked a mixed reaction from the community. Some supported the idea, while others expressed concerns about the potential for spam and the need for testnet participants to maintain autonomy from the foundation.

"Focus on building your project first. Then show goodwill to the foundation," advised TheSoftwareJedi. "Apply for a grant via the foundation, but do not accept incentives that may jeopardize your autonomy."

However, Chad clarified that his goal is not to seek funding from the foundation but rather to explore alternative incentives to combat spam. He questioned the need for testnet spam bots and emphasized the importance of fostering a sustainable ecosystem.

"We aren't looking for foundation funds. Ore will establish a currency, not testnet tools," Chad stated.

Chad's proposal follows his recent announcement that Ore would temporarily suspend mining operations to address Solana's network congestion and Ore's stakeholders' well-being. He also highlighted the need for an overhauled smart contract framework to enhance network stability.

Ore is a blockchain-based project built on Solana that seeks to combine the security of proof-of-work (PoW) with Solana's fast transaction capabilities. However, Ore's activities have significantly contributed to Solana's network congestion, impacting transaction scheduling and leading to high transaction failure rates.

Solana developers have responded by releasing mainnet beta update v1.17.31 to address the ongoing congestion. This patch includes enhancements to improve network performance, with further improvements planned for v1.18.

The Solana Foundation has not yet publicly commented on Hardhat Chad's proposal. However, the foundation has previously acknowledged the importance of incentivizing testnet activity, stating that it is "actively exploring" various options.

As the Solana ecosystem continues to evolve, the need for robust testnet participation and effective incentives will become increasingly critical to ensure the platform's long-term stability and growth.
