Solana Devs Pass Symbolic Block Limit Increase, Aim for Further Expansion
Dec 12, 2024 at 06:30 pm
Solana, one of the top blockchain projects in the cryptocurrency industry, has recently passed the first proposal tackling the issue of the block limit.

Solana developers have approved the first increase in the blockchain's block limit, a move that signals the network's commitment to maintaining operability and scalability in preparation for the chain's future demand.
Solana Devs Pass Symbolic Block Limit Increase, Aim for Further Expansion
Solana, a top blockchain project in the crypto industry, has passed its first proposal to address the issue of the block limit, kicking off what Solana Foundation’s Head of Staking Ben Hawkins has called “the scaling wars.”
The measure was proposed in Solana Improvement Document (SIDM) 0207, which suggested an increase of 2 million units, moving the limit from 48 million to 50 million units. While this increase is modest and experimental, it signifies the developers' intent to continue enhancing the network's capacity to handle future demand. Hawkins highlighted that this work was preceded by “major stability and performance work by the Anza and Fire Dancer teams.”
Andrew Fitzgerald, a software engineer at Anza and the document's author, stated that there were no plans to implement an automatic increasing limit system, despite community members calling for a systematic procedure to increase the limit by fixed percentages.
Fitzgerald explained:
“We have no plans for some automatic increasing limit at this time; any further changes will go through the same SIDM process.”
He added that further increases would depend on how things go from implementing this upgrade and how quickly they can upgrade performance.
Hawkins noted that there were issues stemming from the assumption that the blocksize would always remain static, and this first expansion would serve to address these issues for upcoming upgrades. “Stay tuned for future increases and ongoing efforts to scale Solana. Big things ahead!” he added, suggesting that more increases will follow this move.
Solana faced congestion issues earlier this year as it had to support a bulk of the meme coin activity surge. However, the developers have been on top of the problems, passing several fixes that helped mitigate the issue, including an optional central scheduler option to address these congestion hiccups when the network experiences high traffic levels.
