Solana Crowned as Blockchain Speed King

May 17, 2024 at 10:52 pm

Solana has emerged as the fastest blockchain, surpassing Ethereum and other major networks with a staggering daily average of 1,053 transactions per second (TPS), significantly higher than the 22.8 TPS recorded by Ethereum and 190 TPS by Polygon. Despite reaching only 1.6% of its theoretical maximum speed, Solana's impressive performance highlights the potential for further growth, while non-EVM blockchains continue to outpace their EVM counterparts in transaction processing capabilities.

Solana Crowned as Blockchain Speed King

Solana Reigns Supreme as World's Fastest Blockchain

A comprehensive analysis conducted by CoinGecko has revealed the emergence of Solana as the preeminent blockchain in terms of sheer speed, boasting an astonishing average transaction rate of 1,053 transactions per second (TPS). This remarkable performance dwarfs its nearest competitors, Sui and Binance Smart Chain (BSC), which trail behind with 854 TPS and 378 TPS, respectively.

Solana's Explosive Memecoin Frenzy Propels Transaction Volume

During the height of the memecoin craze on April 6, 2024, Solana's actual average TPS surged to an astounding 1,504, a testament to its unrivaled transaction processing capabilities. This blistering pace made Solana an astonishing 46 times faster than Ethereum, whose TPS languished at a mere 22.8, and over five times faster than Polygon, the most efficient Ethereum scaling solution, which managed 190 TPS.

Solana's Potential for Growth Remains Immense

Despite its impressive performance, Solana has only tapped into a mere 1.6% of its theoretical maximum speed of 65,000 TPS, hinting at the immense potential for further growth. While the network's high transaction volume has occasionally led to congestion, upcoming upgrades hold promise for mitigating these bottlenecks and unlocking even higher real-world TPS.

Non-EVM Blockchains Outpace EVM Counterparts

CoinGecko's report uncovers a striking trend: non-Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) blockchains far outpace their EVM-compatible counterparts in terms of speed. Sui, a non-EVM blockchain, ranks second with an impressive 854 TPS, largely driven by the popularity of its onchain game Sui 8192. Other non-EVM blockchains such as TON and Near Protocol exhibit impressive TPS rates of 175 and 117, respectively, while Bitcoin, another non-EVM blockchain, registers a more modest 10.7 TPS.

EVM Blockchains Experience Record TPS Amid Rising Adoption

Within the EVM blockchain ecosystem, Binance Smart Chain (BSC) reigns supreme, achieving a TPS of 378, coinciding with a surge in onchain activity on December 7, 2023. Polygon follows closely behind with a TPS of 190, recorded on November 16, 2023, solidifying its position as the fastest Ethereum scaling solution. Despite these respectable figures, these blockchains remain eclipsed by the blistering speeds of Solana and Sui.

Widespread TPS Surge Indicates Growing Blockchain Adoption

Notably, 24 out of the 25 blockchains surveyed by CoinGecko achieved their highest real TPS within the past 12 months, reflecting the burgeoning adoption and increased activity within the blockchain landscape. This trend, which encompasses Tron's peak on June 12, 2023, to zkLink Nova's recent high on May 13, 2024, underscores the rapidly evolving and increasingly competitive nature of the blockchain industry.

Conclusion

CoinGecko's comprehensive analysis paints a vivid picture of the current blockchain landscape, showcasing Solana's dominance as the world's fastest blockchain. As non-EVM blockchains continue to outpace their EVM counterparts, the future of blockchain scalability and efficiency looks exceedingly promising. The ongoing surge in transaction rates across various blockchains underscores the growing adoption and ubiquitous presence of blockchain technology in the global financial ecosystem.
