Shiba Inu, Shibarium, and Flash Loans: Decoding the $3M Heist
Sep 14, 2025 at 06:02 pm
A deep dive into the recent flash loan attack on Shibarium, the security measures taken, and the market's surprising reaction.

Hold on to your hats, crypto enthusiasts! The world of Shiba Inu, Shibarium, and flash loans just got a whole lot more interesting – and a little bit wild. Shibarium, Shiba Inu's Layer-2 network, recently faced a coordinated flash loan attack, resulting in a nearly $3 million drain. Here's the lowdown.
The Flash Loan Fiasco: How It Went Down
So, how did this digital heist unfold? According to Shiba Inu developer Kaal Dhairya, the attacker used a flash loan to snag 4.6 million BONE, Shibarium's governance token. This move granted them access to a significant chunk of validator signing keys – 10 out of 12, to be exact. This control gave them the power to finalize fraudulent checkpoints on the network’s consensus layer, Heimdall.
With this majority control, the attacker proceeded to drain approximately 224.57 ETH and 92.6 billion SHIB tokens, worth around $2.4 million. An additional $700,000 in KNINE tokens were also impacted, but K9 Finance's swift action to blacklist the attacker's address prevented further damage.
The Aftermath: Freezing Funds and Calling in the Cavalry
In response to the breach, Shibarium developers immediately halted staking and unstaking across the network. Because the borrowed BONE tokens were subject to an unstaking delay, developers managed to freeze the position, effectively locking the attacker out of validator control. Dhairya described the exploit as “sophisticated” and likely “planned for months.”
Law enforcement has been contacted, and security firms like Hexens, Seal 911, and PeckShield are on the case. Interestingly, developers have also extended an olive branch, suggesting a bounty might be considered if the attacker returns the funds, instead of legal action.
The Curious Case of Ryoshi Labs
Community researcher Zilayo pointed to suspicious validator behavior tied to Ryoshi Labs. The fraudulent checkpoint was signed by 10 validators who controlled about 40% of the stake. Once the attacker delegated the flash-loaned BONE to Ryoshi’s validator, the weighted stake surpassed 66%, enabling a full consensus takeover.
Market Reaction: BONE Spikes, SHIB Surges
In a bizarre twist, the price of BONE spiked immediately after the attack, briefly rising from $0.165 to $0.294 before settling around $0.202. SHIB, meanwhile, jumped over 8%.
The Bigger Picture: Crypto Hacks on the Rise
This incident underscores a concerning trend. CertiK reports that crypto investors lost over $2.2 billion to hacks, scams, and breaches in the first half of 2025 alone. Wallet breaches and phishing attacks are major culprits, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures across the board.
A Silver Lining?
While the attack on Shibarium is undoubtedly a setback, it also demonstrates the resilience and responsiveness of the Shiba Inu community. The quick actions taken to freeze funds, involve law enforcement, and conduct thorough investigations are commendable. Plus, the offer of a bounty shows a willingness to resolve the situation amicably.
My Two Satoshis
It seems like Ryoshi Labs were compromised from the start, or malicious from the start. With an offer of reward, it may encourage hackers to do more of the same in the future.
What's Next for Shiba Inu?
Despite this hiccup, the Shiba Inu ecosystem continues to evolve. While SHIB has faced challenges due to its massive circulating supply, projects like Remittix are stepping into the spotlight with a focus on real-world utility and cross-border payments. As the crypto landscape matures, it's crucial to diversify and explore projects that offer more than just meme appeal.
So, there you have it – a whirlwind tour of the Shibarium flash loan attack. It's a wild ride in the crypto world, folks. Stay safe, stay informed, and maybe keep a closer eye on those validator keys!
