SEC Seeks Public Input on Proposed Ethereum ETFs
Apr 04, 2024 at 07:30 am
The SEC has requested public comments on pending Ethereum ETF applications from Grayscale, Fidelity, and Bitwise. This follows the approval of Bitcoin ETFs in January and the upcoming May 23rd deadline for a decision on VanEck's filing. The SEC's call for comments allows it to gather public input on the proposed products before making a decision.

SEC Solicits Public Comments on Pending Ethereum Exchange-Traded Funds
Washington, D.C. - April 4, 2024 - In a closely watched development, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has invited public commentary on three pending applications for Ethereum-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This move comes as the May 23rd deadline for a decision on the first-ever Bitcoin ETF rapidly approaches.
The SEC's request for public input, published on Tuesday, April 2nd, marks the initiation of a 21-day comment period for ETF applications submitted by Grayscale, Fidelity, and Bitwise. This process allows the SEC to gather feedback from the public on the proposed products before making a determination on their approval.
The request for comments underscores the SEC's commitment to evaluating the potential risks and benefits of Ethereum ETFs for investors. The agency has been under increasing pressure to approve such products, following the landmark approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024.
However, analysts remain cautious about the possibility of Ethereum ETFs receiving approval by the May 23rd deadline. Concerns have been raised over the SEC's lack of engagement with the applications and the ongoing probe of the Ethereum Foundation by the agency.
Despite the skepticism, some experts believe that a delayed approval could ultimately benefit the Ethereum ETF market. Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer of Bitwise, suggests that it may provide traditional financial institutions (TradFi) with more time to adjust to Bitcoin before embracing Ethereum.
"TradFi needed some time to get comfortable with Bitcoin before they were ready for the next thing," Hougan said. "A longer wait for Ethereum ETFs could give them more time to do their due diligence and ensure that these products are well-structured and properly regulated."
The SEC's decision on the pending Ethereum ETFs is expected to have a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market. Approval could lead to increased institutional investment in Ethereum and wider adoption by retail investors. However, a rejection or delay could dampen enthusiasm and slow the growth of the Ethereum ecosystem.
The SEC is actively reviewing the submitted applications and will consider all public comments received before making a final determination. The agency's decision is expected to be announced prior to the May 23rd deadline.
