Safe Token Crashes 42% After Transferability Unlocked
Apr 30, 2024 at 07:02 pm
After being locked for two years, Safe (SAFE) tokens' transferability was unlocked on April 23, leading to a 42% price drop from $3.26 to $1.88 by April 30. This move followed a SafeDAO vote where 99.1% of participants approved the proposal, with the DAO stating they delayed the release to promote "progressive decentralization."

Safe Token Price Plummets by 42% After Transferability Unlock
The Safe (SAFE) token underwent a significant price drop of 42% following the unlocking of its transferability feature on April 23rd. On the day of the unlock, the token traded at $3.26, but it had fallen to $1.88 by April 30th.
The Safe token contract's pause was lifted on April 23rd, allowing holders to transfer their tokens. This lock had been in place for two years, implemented in 2022 by the project's decentralized autonomous organization (DAO).
The decision to unlock the tokens stemmed from a vote by SafeDAO on a token transferability proposal, which received overwhelming support with 99.1% of participants voting in favor.
A spokesperson for Safe explained to Cointelegraph that the DAO delayed the release of the tokens to "allow for progressive decentralization." During this period, the DAO worked collaboratively on a roadmap covering various areas, including governance processes and resource allocation. The goal was to ensure the maturity of these areas before unlocking the tokens.
The spokesperson emphasized that the proposal enabling token transferability was only formulated once the milestones set by the DAO had been achieved. They stated:
"Unlocking SAFE token brings more utility to the Safe ecosystem, powering the movement for better user experience through smart accounts. This milestone marks the beginning of a new chapter in the journey to making digital ownership easy and accessible."
Despite the constraints imposed by the locked tokens and the challenging market conditions, the Safe team reported a remarkable 22-fold increase in its user base. The spokesperson also noted that the team had secured $100 billion in assets and witnessed the creation of 7.5 million accounts.
However, despite the ecosystem's significant growth, the token's price suffered a substantial decline after the DAO enabled its transferability.
According to data from CoinGecko, a leading coin information website, Safe was trading at $3.26 on April 23rd. At the time of writing, the token is hovering around $1.88 per token, representing a 42% decrease since the transferability feature was activated.
In light of the project's recent developments, the Safe spokesperson outlined the team's vision for the future. They stated that the project is focused on building an ownership layer for the internet, empowering users with control over their data, identity, and assets within the Web3 space.
The spokesperson also revealed plans to implement native integration for layer 2 solutions, enhancing scalability and cross-chain functionality with network abstraction. Additionally, the team intends to foster community involvement through the creation of vibrant ecosystem activities.
As the Safe ecosystem continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the price of the SAFE token will respond in the long term.
