Why Is Ripple Limiting RLUSD Circulation to 53.1M?

Jan 04, 2025 at 08:06 pm

Despite hitting the cap on the first days, the supply hasn't increased. Is Ripple being cautious, or is there a bigger strategy at play?

Why Is Ripple Limiting RLUSD Circulation to 53.1M?

Ripple’s [XRP] dollar-backed stablecoin, RLUSD, has maintained a tight supply since its launch last year, quickly hitting its cap. Now, the fintech behemoth appears to be pursuing a strategic approach to minting, aiming to control scarcity and ensure long-term value for holders.

On Friday, Ripple’s RLUSD Treasury minted over 600,000 RLUSD tokens, marking the first significant supply increase in months. XRP trader Arthur, discussing the development on X (formerly Twitter), highlighted the importance of scarcity in maintaining RLUSD’s value.

“A surge in supply could lead to inflation, driving prices down and destabilizing market confidence,” Arthur noted.

Currently, RLUSD’s total supply is pegged at 53.1 million tokens. Ripple seems to be prioritizing organic demand before further increasing circulation. Adding tokens to the market prematurely could risk devaluation, affecting the stablecoin’s $1 price target.

Scarcity as a strategic advantage?

Ripple’s approach to scarcity signals its commitment to long-term stability and adoption rather than pursuing short-term market trends. According to Arthur, this scarcity-driven strategy complements Ripple’s reputation for managing RLUSD responsibly.

Ripple’s cautious approach may also be linked to regulatory considerations. The firm likely has a substantial reserve of RLUSD tokens but releases them selectively to avoid potential scrutiny over market manipulation or compliance issues.

Moreover, flooding the market with RLUSD could overshadow XRP, Ripple’s flagship cryptocurrency, which recently turned bullish after a prolonged period of stagnancy. Arthur suggested that Ripple might be waiting for increased institutional adoption or significant market demand before expanding RLUSD’s supply.

Arthur predicted that 20 January could be an important date for scaling up RLUSD’s supply, potentially aligning with broader institutional developments or regulatory clarity.
